It’s still early in the spring migration, so those who came out for the first of four Brookline Bird Club wetlands tours did not see many visiting species. But they were rewarded with the sighting of this coyote or coyote cross! The future BBC tours will be Thursdays May 7, 14, and 21 from 7:00 to 8:30 a.m.

If you’re looking for more opportunities to get your hands dirty, you can help plant trees, shrubs, and grasses at Nira Rock Urban Wild on Saturday, May 9, 10:00-1:00. Meet at the end of Grotto Glen Road (adjacent to the Jefferson Playground at 10 Grotto Glen Road). Volunteers will be installing, mulching, and watering about 30 new trees and shrubs as well as installing new grass seed to stabilize areas with bare soil and minimize invasive w**d encroachment. The event will be held rain or shine, but will be cancelled in the event of severe weather. Friends of Nira Rock

Thanks to the more than 40 volunteers who came out on April 11 to plant more than a dozen trees, 100 winterberry saplings, and 150 native sedge plugs in the Roslindale Wetlands. These plants also received beautiful berms (to help retain water) and were watered and enclosed with mammal protection fencing. Thank you, one and all!

This gorgeous Cooper's Hawk was spotted in the Roslindale Wetlands this weekend. The barring pattern on the chest is one way to identify this bird. Thanks to Rob Torres for the photos!
