The colors of summer are flying high. This photo captures the past few days’ debut of swamp rose mallow and red cardinal flowers. In the background a stand of boneset is almost ready to pop. Goldenrod, bee balm, and other high summer blooms are here or not far behind.

This old cart enables volunteers to deliver water or tools easily to any restoration site around the wetlands. Joe and Alberto at Jo-Lan Automotive on Centre Street fixed it up for us. Because of its purpose, they refused any payment.

Thank you to everyone who volunteered at Saturday's summer Serve & Learn! About 20 people came out to help us water and w**d around the plants we installed in April. Many hands make light work -- we finished up in record time! Also spotted: a red meadowhawk dragonfly and a piece of old junk that gave us saxophone vibes.

This series of photos shows the progress since last August on the house being built by Habitat for Humanity Greater Boston near the wetlands edge. This house and the nearby rehab-in-progress at 104 Walter Street will each feature two affordable home ownership units. Although work on the new structure was intermittent between August and May, the crew framed out the entire building in June. Habitat projects completion later this year or in early 2027.

These native red osier dogwood bushes with their flat white flowers are located across the trail from the wildflower meadow. They are blooming right now and will hopefully continue for a few more days. Although these bushes were planted by restoration contractors a few years ago, naturally occurring exemplars are abundant in the swampy interior. Red osiers are home to several insect and butterfly species. Pollinators frequent the flowers, and many birds and small mammals eat its berries. The red stalks stand out in winter landscapes.

This gorgeous elderberry bush was blown over and partially uprooted by Saturday’s high winds. It was planted by city contractors several years ago and has since reached 10 feet. Fingers crossed for a full recovery and long life.
