It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of retired K9 Kazan, who was found deceased earlier today. Kazan was a great dog, a dedicated partner, and a beloved member of our department and community. An autopsy is most likely to be conducted to determine cause of death.
Kazan was one of the first 2 K9s that RPD recieved when starting up the K9 unit again in 2020. Kazan's first handler was Officer (now) Agent S. Wentland. Kazan then had Officer J. Juarez as his second handler until he retired in 2024. Throughout his years of distinguished service, K9 Kazan worked tirelessly to keep our streets safe as if he didnt have a chill or off button. Kazan assisted in locating numerous large drug busts throughout his career as well as multiple fi****ms and resulting in felony convictions of dangerous individuals that possessed them.
Kazan will forever be known as the escape artist whose kennel resembled one from Jurrasic Park with 10ft high steel bars, he liked to try and catch neighborhood cats and squirrels (to play of course) causing his handler to sprint after him in a foot pursuit.
Kazan rest easy, you will be missed dork. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Juarez and Wentland family and anyone else who had the privilege of meeting this stellar K9.
