As of Wednesday, June 17, the Roswell Fire Department is operating its own ambulance service as part of its Emergency Medical Services.

While RFD personnel are equipped with emergency medical technician or paramedic skills, and have long been the first responders to medical calls, the ambulance transportation of patients has been provided for many years through a contract with American Medical Response, a private ambulance operator.

RFD’s EMS Division has hired many of the emergency medical personnel who worked locally for AMR. Ambulances are based at RFD Station 1 (200 S. Richardson Ave.), Station 3 (2800 N. Wilshire Blvd.) and Station 5 (119 W. Gayle St.).

Our thanks to AMR for the many years of service it provided to Roswell and this area. Our citizens will continue to get the high-quality emergency medical response and transportation they deserve as RFD assumes operation of the ambulance service.

Work is continuing on the expansion of RFD Station 1, a project expected to last into early 2027.

Throughout the project, a half-block section of West Walnut Street adjacent to the fire station will remain closed between South Richardson Avenue and the alley behind (to the west of) the fire station. This closure is to accommodate parking that is not currently available in another parking area because of the needs of the building-expansion work on the southwest corner of the station.

Residents on Walnut Street will have access throughout the project. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

RFD responded early Friday (June 5) to a house fire in the 600 block of West McGaffey Street after two RPD officers on patrol noticed the fire about 2:20 a.m. A person could be heard inside the house, which was filled with heavy smoke. Firefighters made entry and rescued a 59-year-old man, who was then transported to a local hospital. He was suffering from smoke inhalation and was transferred to hospital elsewhere for further medical treatment.

Fire crews quickly had the fire under control. The flames were contained to a bedroom and hallway. There were no injuries to firefighters.

The Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating to determine the cause of the fire.

The City of Roswell's Mission Pillar Award recognizes a city employee’s efforts in exhibiting one or more of the city's core values of accountability, communication, excellence, integrity and teamwork. One award winner is selected each month from the nominations received that month.

The honoree for the May Mission Pillar Award is Terri Sykes, an emergency communications dispatcher at consolidated dispatch, the Pecos Valley Regional Communications Center.

The award nomination submitted for Terri refers to her as an “exceptional dispatcher” who “handles every call with professionalism, compassion, and precise instruction, ensuring callers receive the highest level of care during critical situations.”

The nomination noted one incident in which Terri assisted a father through the successful birth of his daughter…“guiding him step-by-step to ensure a safe delivery while keeping him calm until emergency medical personnel arrived.”

“Terri communicates with clarity and composure, maintains control of high-stress situations, and consistently prioritizes the safety and well-being of the public,” the nomination said. “Her dedication to excellence and her ability to support both callers and responders reflect her strong commitment to serve and teamwork.”

With temperatures climbing this spring, and summer soon to follow, it is critically important for everyone to be well aware of the danger hot vehicles pose to young children who may be unable to get out of a vehicle themselves.

Parents and other child caregivers must raise their awareness of the importance of never leaving children inside unattended vehicles. The temperature inside a parked vehicle can quickly reach lethal levels in hot, or even warm, weather. Babies and other young children, and pets as well, are not able to escape a hot vehicle on their own.

The Roswell Fire Department and Roswell Police Department remind everyone all it takes is a brief distraction, or trying to hurry through a busy day, or dealing with stress or other emotions to cause a parent or other caretaker to exit a vehicle without thinking about a child who was along on the trip. Don’t let a moment of forgetfulness turn into a tragedy. Take whatever steps necessary to remember a child is with you, and certainly never knowingly leave a child in the car for even what you think will only be a brief moment.

Outside temperatures don’t have to be sweltering to become dangerous for youngsters inside a vehicle. With an outside temperature of just 80 degrees, the inside of a closed-up vehicle can quickly reach 110 degrees and higher, according to researchers. Under the heat of the spring or summer sun, it takes only 10 minutes for the temperature in a vehicle to rise nearly 20 degrees. Leaving a window open a crack or parking in the shade aren't sufficient safeguards.

Most parents cannot imagine themselves leaving, even accidentally, their child in a hot vehicle. Yet statistics show more than half of the instances of child deaths in hot vehicles occur after the child was accidentally or unknowingly left in the vehicle. Remember, young children, especially babies, often fall asleep in their car seats, becoming quiet little passengers. For babies in rear‐facing child seats, their seats – whether occupied or not – always look the same when seen by someone in the front seat who can only see the back side of the child seat.

The second most common instance of children dying in hot vehicles is when children get into the vehicle on their own, thinking it would be a fun spot to play or simply satisfy their curiosity. Never leave children alone in or around vehicles. Always lock vehicles when you leave them, and do not leave keys or remote door openers where a child can get them.

For more information and safety suggestions about this and other topics related to children and vehicles, visit kidsandcars.org.
