On May 9, 2026, the New Mexico Military Institute Army ROTC commissioning ceremony celebrated 24 cadets as they officially became Second Lieutenants in the United States Army. Surrounded by family, friends, mentors, and fellow cadets, each new officer was pinned with their Second Lieutenant bars by loved ones and received their first salute from the NCO of their choice — a tradition that reflects the respect, leadership, and dedication earned throughout their ROTC journey.

We are incredibly proud of these new officers and all they have accomplished through discipline, perseverance, and commitment to service. The future of the Army is brighter because of leaders like these.

Congratulations to the Class of 2026 — we wish you success in all your future endeavors and cannot wait to see the impact you will make as Army officers.

What a game day to remember! 🇺🇸⚾🔥

On Saturday, April 25, 2026, NMMI SROTC’s Professor of Military Science, LTC Karl M. Harness, brought the energy to the Broncos baseball game by throwing out the ceremonial first pitch—fired straight to our very own ROTC Cadet Loya behind the plate!

Huge thanks to the Broncos for the incredible atmosphere and continued support of our cadets. Proud moments like these showcase the strength of our community and future Army leaders! Garry Owen!

On Saturday, March 28th, the Military Science IV cadets of the Garry Owen Squadron continued their Staff Ride at Glorieta Pass, diving deeper into the history and lessons of the battlefield.

The day began with a visit to the Santa Fe National Cemetery, where cadets took time to reflect on the legacy of soldiers and servicemembers who made the ultimate sacrifice. Through thoughtful discussion, they were reminded of the responsibility they carry as future leaders—preparing to commission as Second Lieutenants on May 9th.

The remainder of the day focused on strengthening unit cohesion and camaraderie. Cadets explored Santa Fe’s Railroad District during a relaxed lunch, competed in team-building activities like Archery Tag and Risk, and closed out the evening around a campfire with s’mores before returning to the Institute the following morning.

From honoring the past to building bonds for the future, the Staff Ride continues to shape the next generation of Army leaders.

Last weekend, the Garry Owen Squadron's MSIV cadets went on their yearly staff ride. They traveled to Santa Fe, NM, to fulfill a key requirement on their path to commissioning as Second Lieutenants by analyzing and discussing the Battle of Glorieta Pass.

A military staff ride is an immersive, on-site study of a historical battle, giving future leaders the opportunity to analyze real-world decisions, tactics, and outcomes. Throughout the experience, cadets led “stands,” where they broke down key moments of the battle—examining critical decisions, their impacts, and the lessons learned.

This event challenged cadets to think critically, evaluate both successes and failures, and apply those lessons to their future roles as Army officers. From the first stand to the final discussion, these cadets demonstrated professionalism, insight, and leadership.

Outstanding work, cadets—your future in the Army starts with understanding the past.

On March 21, 2026, NMMI SROTC and JROTC cadets took on the challenge of the 37th Bataan Death March at White Sands Missile Range an experience defined by grit, resilience, and remembrance.

This event is more than a test of endurance; it is a powerful tribute honoring the brave service members who endured the hardships of the original Bataan Death March. With every mile, our cadets carried forward a legacy of sacrifice, demonstrating unwavering respect for those who came before them.

We are especially proud to recognize our JROTC cadets for earning 1st place in their division—a testament to their discipline, teamwork, and determination.

From the first step to the final mile, our cadets embodied the values of honor, courage, and commitment. We couldn’t be more proud of their accomplishment and the respect they showed throughout this meaningful journey.

This week, our ROTC cadre stepped away from the training field and spent some time at the driving range 🏌️‍♀️⛳️ Sharpening a different skill set. From perfecting their swing to engaging in a little friendly competition, it was a great opportunity to build camaraderie and unwind as a team.

Just like in ROTC, success at the range takes focus, discipline, patience, and follow-through. Whether it was crushing drives down the fairway or working on consistency, our cadre showed that leaders are always striving to improve — on and off duty. Strong teams are built through shared experiences, and time like this strengthens the bonds that make our program successful.
