New Mexico Military Institute Garry Owen Squadron

New Mexico Military Institute Garry Owen Squadron Official page for Senior ROTC at New Mexico Military Institute. There are only five MJCs in the United States. Short of Como, Mississippi. Orell. Jones.

A Military Junior College (MJC) allows Cadets to become commissioned Officers in two years, in-stead of the usual four, through the ROTC/Early Commissioning Program. New Second Lieutenants must complete a Bachelor's degree within three years after graduating from NMMI. Begun in 1966, the Early Commissioning Program (ECP) plays a major role in officer production. In some years, ECP Officers have ac

counted for over 60 percent of all ROTC Second Lieutenants in the United States Army. The program has major financial incen-tives for students who receive their commissions early and serve as Officers while still attending col-lege and gaining service time for promotions and retirement. In 1911 the first cadets to receive commissions as second lieutenants in the Army at NMMI were Eugene Lohman of Las Cruces,New Mexico and Mord P. Five years later, Senior Reserve Officer Training Corps was established at New Mexico Military Institute on December 3, 1916. In 1965 the Military Science Department commissioned the first second lieutenant under the Army's Early Commissioning Program, 2LT Patrick H. New Mexico Military Institute ROTC contin-ued to make history in 1997 when the battalion was named the best ROTC battalion in 4th Region ROTC, by winning the Macarthur Award. In 2007 US Army Cadet Command recognized the NMMI Army ROTC ECP as the most improved military school ROTC program in the country. Over the decades, NMMI ROTC has produced thousands of Army Officers and the squadron is con-sistently one of the top producers of second lieutenants in US Army Cadet Command. Soldiers and Officers that have passed through NMMI ROTC and JROTC programs have been recognized for their valor and over 30 former Cadets have risen to become flag officers. On November 1, 1988 New Mexico Military Institute ROTC took on the regimental linage of 1st Squadron, 7th Cavalry through the decree of its commander, LTC Emil K. Kluever and command sergeant major, CSM Alzalkia C. Since that day, we have been proud to be the Garryowen Squadron. This week, Garry Owen ROTC would like to congratulate cadets Sanchez and Duran for their outstanding performance during last weekend's JFTX. Cadet Sanchez is from Florida, where she actively pursued any opportunity to become a better leader and gain an education. While in JROTC, her instructors pushed her to enroll at NMMI and join the ROTC program. Despite this being her first semester at NMMI, Sanchez has completed her first 12-mile ruck and earned a slot for CTLT in Hawaii. Cadet Duran is from Los Cruces, New Mexico, and came to NMMI for his first year in Highschool. During his time in high school, Duran has pushed himself as a leader by participating in Eagle scouts and Bataan Death March. While Duran graduated high school, he returned to NMMI to pursue a degree and become an Army Officer.

CADET OF THE WEEK:
Garry Owen Squadron would like to congratulate MSIII cadet Correa and MSIV cadet Curnutt for their outstanding performance. Cadet Correa has worked hard throughout the semester to achieve his only goal of graduation and commissioning as a 2LT into the Army. Correa has gone above and beyond to motivate and lead his peers in physically and mentally challenging situations. Cadet Curnutt is the MSIV S-1 for Garry Owen Squadron and worked throughout the semester tracking each cadet's training and commissioning status. Curnutt has never failed to meet the expectations of his peers or his cadre and has seen him grow into a fantastic future 2LT.

This week NMMI SROTC conducted preliminary marksman instruction(PMI) to prepare cadets for next week's range day. This instruction period is essential to train cadets on their weapons and the qualification they will be testing. Since we will be heading to a range next week, it is vital to train and retrain cadets on safety. 1st Brigade Army ROTC - Spartans U.S. Army Cadet Command (ROTC)

Last week cadets from NMMI SROTC took part in a 2-day Staff Ride to Glorieta Pass, New Mexico. The battle at Glorieta Pass was fought between the Union and Confederate forces and challenged the complete control of the western territories. This battle was decided when Union forces destroyed the Confederate supplies, which ended the campaign. Today Glorieta Pass is a National Park to the east of Santa Fe in the Pecos region. NMMI SROTC was lucky enough to have Ranger Eric take us on the battle site, where he provided help to immerse cadets in the battle itself. At the end of the presentations, cadets headed back to Glorieta Adventure Camp where they enjoyed the wonderful nature and activities throughout the camp. On the last day at Glorieta, NMMI visited the 160th anniversary of the battle, where they talked with reenactors and viewed replica guns and cannons shoot. Overall, NMMI Staff Ride was a considerable success, and it couldn't have been possible without the huge contribution of all our cadre; thank you. 1st Brigade Army ROTC - Spartans

With the return of cadets from spring break, we get to see them on the post and ready for this week's lab. Before cadets left, SROTC conducted a defense lab where they learned how to utilize squad leaders and set up an area defense. These labs will pick up in difficulty as the end of the semester gets closer, and MSIII makes their trip to CST 2022.

This week, we congratulate CDT Harris for showing outstanding performance as an MSIII cadet. CDT Harris comes from Wiesbaden, Germany, where he heard of the New Mexico Military Institutes Early Commissioning Program and became instantly hooked. Harris has always dreamed of becoming an Officer in the United States Army and found that ECP allowed for a unique opportunity to do this. ECP allowed him to commission within two years while giving him the chance to continue his education. His time at NMMI allowed him to learn many things to prepare him for CST this summer, specifically the structure and leadership skills. When Harris graduates, he hopes to commission as a Medical Officer, where he would travel the world and help others.
