As of Wednesday, June 17, the Roswell Fire Department is operating its own ambulance service as part of its Emergency Medical Services.

While RFD personnel are equipped with emergency medical technician or paramedic skills, and have long been the first responders to medical calls, the ambulance transportation of patients has been provided for many years through a contract with American Medical Response, a private ambulance operator.

RFD’s EMS Division has hired many of the emergency medical personnel who worked locally for AMR. Ambulances are based at RFD Station 1 (200 S. Richardson Ave.), Station 3 (2800 N. Wilshire Blvd.) and Station 5 (119 W. Gayle St.).

Our thanks to AMR for the many years of service it provided to Roswell and this area. Our citizens will continue to get the high-quality emergency medical response and transportation they deserve as RFD assumes operation of the ambulance service.

UPDATE: The start date for this project has been moved to June 29.
----------------
A two-mile segment of Second Street through Roswell will be undergoing pavement maintenance and improvements for an estimated four and a half weeks beginning June 22. Portions of the street will be reduced to one lane as the work proceeds, but the street will remain open to traffic throughout the work.

The mill-and-fill project will cover a segment of Second Street between Sunset Avenue on the west and just beyond the city limits on the east, which are located just east of Atkinson Avenue. Crews plan to first work on the eastbound inside and center lanes, starting at Sunset and working west to east. Crews will then turn around and go east to west working on the westbound inside and center lanes. The process will then be repeated as work addresses the outside lane in each direction.

The mill-and-fill process is an asphalt resurfacing method that involves grinding up and removing the damaged top layer of an existing roadway and immediately paving a new fresh, smooth layer of asphalt in its place. This project will extend the life of the roadway for the next 10 to 15 years, avoiding major construction during that period.

The project is estimated to be completed around July 22, although any delays caused by weather or other factors could push the completion date later. Work is scheduled to take place from sunrise to sundown each day.

The approximately $1.2 million project (mill-and-fill plus restriping) is being paid for mainly with a grant from the New Mexico Department of Transportation. The city has budgeted to pay the 5 percent of the cost for which it will be responsible.

The City of Roswell Streets Department and its contractors (Brasier Asphalt doing the mill-and-fill and San Bar Construction doing the restriping afterward) thank citizens in advance for their patience and understanding during this project to improve the durability and extend the life of this major thoroughfare through Roswell.

Motorists are asked to be mindful of work crews and be aware of the following:
• Be alert and expect frequent changes to traffic patterns.
• There may be heavy dust and noise during working hours.
• Access to driveways and other entrances may be blocked temporarily.
• New asphalt may be sticky until it is fully cooled. Avoid sharp turns or quick starts on fresh asphalt to prevent tracking it elsewhere.
• The priority of the Streets Department is the safety of citizens and work crews.

If the public sees anything during this project that raises a concern, they are asked to notify the Streets Department by calling 575-624-6730 and selecting option 4.

Organizations putting on tourism-related events can find applications and other information on the City of Roswell website about requesting city lodgers’ tax funding for those events. The deadline is approaching for funding requests for events taking place during the first half of the city’s upcoming fiscal year that starts July 1.

Organizations seeking lodgers’ tax funds for events to be held between July 1, 2026, and Dec. 31, 2026, must submit applications by 5 p.m. June 30. The Occupancy Tax (Lodgers’ Tax) Board will consider those requests at an upcoming meeting.

Lodgers’ tax is a 5-percent tax paid by customers of hotels, motels and other lodging establishments. State law allows municipalities to collect this tax through lodging businesses. The revenue from this tax is used on tourism-related promotion of the city and for expenses related to tourism events and certain facilities.

For more information and to find a link to the funding-request application, visit roswell-nm.gov/1392/Lodgers-Tax-Funding-Request. A special-events permit may be necessary for certain events. Information and a permit application, as well as a street-closure request form, can be found at roswell-nm.gov/1397/Special-Event-Permits-and-Street-Closure.
