As we prepare for our upcoming exhibition, 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐞𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞: 𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐂𝐇𝐒 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, we're sharing a few favorite critters from collections. This diminutive brass hedgehog is actually a pincushion, manufactured around 1875 by W. Avery & Son in England. At some point it found its way to Schenectady where it's lived ever since! Hedgehogs are quite rare in American material culture, makeing this hedgehog all the more of a delight!

A hidden menagerie dwells deep within the SCHS archives. Though rarely seen, these creatures are alive with symbolism. For centuries, Americans have looked to the animal kingdom to represent facets of ourselves. Powerful eagles, pastoral sheep, and elusive stags adorn our household objects. Some of these creatures are central to creation myths or nation building. Others are simply beloved childhood companions. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐞𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞: 𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐂𝐇𝐒 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 unites SCHS’ critters, showcasing the myriad ways animal forms have inspired and represented us. 📣 We're thrilled to announce that author Russell Shorto will be the keynote speaker for our Crossroads of the Revolution Symposium on November 7!

📜 He'll be in good company, joined by fellow historians and authors Claire Bellerjeau, John Gearing, Donald F. Johnson, Sean Kelleher, and Kiersten Marcil! Together, we'll explore different aspects of the American Revolution in upstate New York, with a particular focus on Schenectady as a crossroads of conflict and supply.

🎪 Immersive, site-specific theatre comes to Mabee Farm this May! Step into the Capital Region in 1777, and encounter the American Revolution as it unfolds from multiple, unheard perspectives. In this production, the audience does not simply observe the past; they walk through it, experiencing the human cost, moral complexity, and emotional urgency of moments that shaped the nation.

🛶 We're thrilled to announce that Pedal-Paddle, the adventure by land and river returns on June 6!

🚲 This special tour allows us to explore unique and hidden places right in our own backyard. This tour begins at the Lock 7 Boat Launch in Niskayuna. From there, we will kayak to Lions Park where we swap our boats for bikes and begin our return trip. Throughout the journey, an expert historian guide will share stories and secrets of the landmarks along the way. Highlights include a passage through a modern canal lock, the thunderous sight of Goat Island Falls and the historic beauty of the Vischer Ferry Area.

💪 We’ll provide the kayaks and the bikes. You provide the enthusiasm and the elbow grease!
