Since 1984, the National PTA and the National Education Association have designated a week in May as a special time to honor and celebrate teachers for the important role they play in the growth and development of our children. This year, May 2nd through May 8th is designated as Teacher Appreciation Week.
Few other professionals influence as many lives as teachers do. Educators contribute to communities across our state every day in many ways. During Teacher Appreciation Week, thousands of communities will take time to honor their local educators and the commitment, enthusiasm and hard work of all educators — past, present and future. Teacher Appreciation Week is our opportunity to show our appreciation to teachers for all the effort they put in each day and the education that we receive thanks to them, and to acknowledge the crucial role teachers play in making sure every student receives a quality education.
The past year has been especially challenging for schools across the country. Every educator and supporting staff have been asked to go above and beyond in service to their schools and communities. Because of the dedication of the educators in Loudoun County Public Schools, our students have been able to experience robust learning opportunities that support the LCPS mission of empowering all students to make meaningful contributions to the world. As a result of this commitment, we not only honor and celebrate our teachers, but also recognize all educators and staff who continue their unwavering commitment to support student success.
While May 2nd through 8th is recognized at Teacher Appreciation Week, the Loudoun County School Board recognizes the entire month of May as Educator Appreciation Month.
On behalf of the Loudoun County School Board, we extend our sincere appreciation, gratitude, and respect to all the educators who contribute to the success of our school division.

The pandemic totally re-shaped the way Loudoun County Public Schools serves meals to its community.
And that’s not a bad thing.
“March 13, 2020, will be etched in my memory as the day school nutrition changed for the better,” said Teresa Lucas. “We have not missed a beat serving meals to LCPS students and, with the USDA waivers, we were able to provide free meals to children from 1 to 18 years of age. This has long been the goal of the School Nutrition Association to provide free meals for all. This worldwide pandemic has shown us that it can be done.”
Lucas is the coordinator, program management for the LCPS Division of School Nutrition Services.
Director of Loudoun County School Nutrition Services Beth Mills said the last year has taught her a great deal about the people she works with, and herself.
