Walter Dean Myers was the recipient of many book awards in his long writing career. “Somewhere in the Darkness” was a 1992 Newbery Honor book and in 2010 Myers was awarded the Coretta Scott King, Virginia Hamilton Award for Lifetime Achievement just to touch on a couple of his noteworthy successes. Myers was a veteran, joining the military when he was 17 and serving for three years before the Vietnam War.

My take on literature and reading is that it’s hard work. We are confronted with difficult topics and ideas, bringing our complicated human condition to us in a way that requires conversation and deep thinking. Not just for logic and argument, but the heart moves with the philosophical notions in the story. But I’m comforted by this reductionist quote from “The Eyes and the Impossible” by Dave Eggers, this year’s winner of the Newbery Award: “Maybe it’s always complicated. No help is simple because no one being helped is simple. The notion that everything was complicated was itself sort of simple, and that made me smile. If we go through life assuming everything will be complicated, and then it is complicated, doesn’t that make us better prepared? What I mean is, if we expect life to be complicated, and life is complicated, then life is simple, right?”
