Today is extra special at Round Top Family Library as we celebrate an exciting new chapter for Katey Crowley! After an incredible 21-year career in education, Katey officially begins her role as RTFL’s Executive Director full time today.

While many may see today as her “first day,” Katey has already been making a tremendous impact behind the scenes while finishing out the school year with La Grange ISD. Her leadership, energy, creativity, and passion for serving our community have already been felt across our campus, and we could not be more excited for what’s ahead.

Katey has dedicated her career to enriching the lives of children, families, and communities, and now she brings that same heart and vision to RTFL full time. We can hardly wait to see all the ways she will continue to grow programs, strengthen connections, and enhance the lives of every patron who walks through our doors.

Please join us in giving Katey a very warm RTFL congratulations and welcome as she officially steps into this exciting new season!

Did You Know? One of Round Top’s most historic homes, The Rummel Haus, sits on the RTFL campus. You’ve probably admired that handsome stone building as you’ve driven by, or perhaps attended a meeting or event within its thick limestone walls, but behind this treasured structure is a rich story that reaches back to the very beginnings of Round Top itself.

Shortly after Round Top was incorporated in 1870, Francis W. McGuire bought property along Mill Street. McGuire served as the town’s first mayor and operated a steam sawmill and other machinery on the property. Carl Wilhelm Rummel, Jr. and wife, Clara Hillebrandt Rummel—whom he married in 1868 at Round Top’s Bethlehem Lutheran Church—acquired the property from McGuire on April 1, 1871 and immediately began building a home where they would raise their family of six children. The Rummel Haus was built around 1872 and is one of the oldest surviving structures in town.

Local history suggests the masonry work was overseen by William’s grandfather, Carl Siegismund Bauer, a skilled German stonemason. Bauer had previously helped construct the Schueddenmagen House in the 1850s and also served as planner and overseer for Bethlehem Lutheran Church. The Rummel Haus reflects the traditional German building techniques brought to Central Texas by 19th-century immigrants, with thick masonry walls and a practical design suited to the Texas climate. Its architectural significance has been recognized through documentation in the Historic American Buildings Survey.

Today, The Rummel Haus is a cherished part of our campus and in fact, it was used as the first library for RTFL when we were established in 2000. Carefully restored and thoughtfully repurposed, it now hosts RTFL’s Board Meetings, mahjong classes, book clubs, educational programs, and community gatherings—preserving its historic character while continuing to serve the people of Round Top more than 150 years after it was built.

Best of all, Round Top Family Library makes this amazing building available for rentals when it is not in use by the library. Check out the details on our website or call 979-249-2700 to reserve your rental.
