📱 PERSON COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE HOSTS INTERNET SAFETY PRESENTATION FOR COUNTY EMPLOYEES

As students across Person County returned to the classroom today, the Person County Sheriff’s Office was proud to provide an important Internet Safety and ICAC (Internet Crimes Against Children) presentation for Person County employees.

Sgt. W.K. Brown Jr. with the ICAC Task Force led the presentation, sharing valuable information about the online world children are navigating every day. The presentation addressed social media, online safety, privacy, digital activity, and ways parents and caregivers can recognize potential dangers their children may encounter online.

With the new school year officially underway, the Person County Sheriff’s Office encourages parents and caregivers to make online safety part of the back-to-school conversation. Talk with your children about what they are seeing and doing online, who they are communicating with, and the importance of protecting their personal information.

🚨 WEEKEND OFFICE HOURS UPDATE 🚨

Please note that the Person County Sheriff’s Office will ONLY be open this weekend from 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM on Saturday and Sunday.

During these limited hours, we will be processing Concealed Handgun Permit (CHP) renewals.

🎒🚔 BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY REMINDERS 🚔🎒

The Person County Sheriff’s Office wishes all of our students, parents, teachers, and school staff a safe and successful school year! As summer comes to an end and students head back to the classroom, now is a great time to review a few simple safety reminders with your children.

📱 Talk About Online Safety
Check your child’s location-sharing settings.
Remind children not to share personal information or their location on social media.
Encourage them to think carefully about who they are communicating with online.

👧 For Younger Children
Know a parent or guardian’s phone number.
Know their home address.
Know how to reach a parent or guardian at work.
Know how to call 911 in an emergency.

🚶 If Your Child Walks to School
Walk with a buddy whenever possible.
Use sidewalks and designated crosswalks.
Obey traffic signals and watch for vehicles.

🚗 For Teen Drivers
Always wear a seatbelt.
Never use a cell phone while driving.
Make sure insurance and registration information is current.

🛑 Stranger Safety
Never accept a ride from someone you don't know.
Encourage children to avoid engaging with strangers.
Consider establishing a family code word. If someone claims to know your family but doesn't know the code word, leave the situation immediately and find a trusted adult.

A few minutes spent talking about safety now can help our children make smart decisions throughout the school year.

🚨 SCAM ALERT – Beware of Bond Payment Scams 🚨

The Person County Sheriff's Office has recently been made aware of a phone scam targeting community members.

A citizen reported receiving a call from someone claiming to be a Lieutenant with a Detention Center, stating that a family member was in custody. The caller then instructed the individual to post a bond online through a website. Fortunately, the citizen recognized the warning signs, asked additional questions, and ended the call without sending any money.

Please remember:
🔹 The Person County Sheriff's Office and Detention Center will never call family members to request that a bond be posted over the phone or online.
🔹 Never send money or post a bond through a website at the direction of an unsolicited caller.
🔹 If you need to post a bond, contact a trusted, licensed bail bondsman or visit the Magistrate's Office for guidance on the proper bond process.

If you receive a suspicious call regarding a loved one being in custody, do not provide personal, financial, or banking information.

Hang up and verify the information by contacting the Person County Sheriff's Office directly.

🚨 SCAM ALERT – DON'T FALL FOR IT! 🚨

The Person County Sheriff's Office is reminding residents to be cautious of scam calls, text messages, and emails that are circulating in our area.

Scammers often pose as law enforcement officers, government agencies, utility companies, banks, or even family members in an attempt to steal your money or personal information. They may claim you have missed jury duty, have an outstanding warrant, owe unpaid taxes, or demand immediate payment using gift cards, cryptocurrency, or payment apps.

Remember:
✅ The Sheriff's Office will never demand payment over the phone.
✅ We will never ask you to pay with gift cards, cryptocurrency, or money transfer services.
✅ Do not provide personal or financial information to unsolicited callers.
✅ If something doesn't seem right, hang up and verify the information by calling the agency directly using an official phone number.

PERSON COUNTY SHERIFF JASON WILBORN ATTENDS NORTH CAROLINA SHERIFFS’ ASSOCIATION ANNUAL BUSINESS CONFERENCE

This week, the North Carolina Sheriffs’ Association hosted sheriffs, sheriffs’ personnel, and their families for its Annual Business Conference. Person County Sheriff Jason Wilborn was among the attendees.

Commenting on the experience, Sheriff Wilborn said, “I’ve had a great week at the 2026 Annual Business Conference. I’m always grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with fellow sheriffs from across the state. The training classes and discussions offered during the Annual Business Conference were outstanding and provided valuable knowledge that I can bring back to better serve the citizens of Person County.”

The Association hosts this multi-day conference each summer, bringing together sheriffs and law enforcement professionals from across North Carolina for several days of training, panel discussions, and collaboration with fellow law enforcement officers and state government officials.

This year's conference featured sessions on Office of Sheriff finance, strategies for addressing businesses selling v**e and THC products, and other issues impacting law enforcement agencies throughout the state. Attendees also heard from distinguished guest speakers, law enforcement leaders, and elected officials.

Each year during the Annual Business Conference, the Association elects members to its Executive Committee. This year's election resulted in the following leadership appointments:

President – Sheriff Cleveland "Clee" Atkinson, Edgecombe County
First Vice President – Sheriff Jeff Crisco, Stanly County
Second Vice President – Sheriff Chip Hughes, Craven County
Third Vice President – Sheriff Brian Chism, Brunswick County

Additionally, Sheriff Joey Lemons of Stokes County was reelected as Secretary, and Sheriff Van Shaw of Cabarrus County was reelected as Treasurer.

Sheriff Clee Atkinson, the Association's newly elected President, commented on his new role:
“It is an honor to continue serving on the Association’s Executive Committee for another year, and I am excited to step into this new role and fill the shoes of the President. Myself and the rest of the Executive Committee will remain dedicated to serving and protecting the Office of Sheriff and all law enforcement in North Carolina.”

Sheriff Wilborn stated that conferences such as this play an important role in ensuring North Carolina sheriffs remain informed on current issues, legislative updates, and best practices that strengthen public safety and enhance service to their communities.

🇺🇸 Happy Independence Day from the Person County Sheriff's Office! 🇺🇸

Today, our nation proudly celebrates the 250th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence—a historic milestone honoring the birth of the United States and the enduring values of freedom, courage, and unity that have shaped our nation since July 4, 1776.

As we commemorate this once-in-a-generation occasion, we remember the sacrifices of those who fought to secure our independence and honor the brave men and women of our Armed Forces, past and present, who have defended those freedoms for generations.

As you gather with family and friends to celebrate, we encourage everyone to make safety part of the holiday:
🎆 Use fireworks responsibly.
🚗 Never drive impaired.
🚤 Never operate a boat while impaired.
💧 Stay hydrated in the summer heat.
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Look out for your family, friends, and neighbors.
