The Religious Freedom Restoration Act is meant to protect an individual from any government entity restricting their Freedom of Religion. It states that a government entity cannot burden an individual’s Freedom of Religion without compelling interest. What is compelling interest? This means that the government has to prove beyond reasonable doubt that the course of action they are taking (whether it be a law, an amendment to the constitution, or even just a regulation) is both the only way to achieve their goal and the least restrictive means of doing so. It protects the individual’s right to practice his/her religion and gives them a legal defense when that right is abridged.
