Please help us welcome our newest police officer to the Royal Oak Police Department!

Officer Nico Escobar joins our agency bringing a background of military service and law enforcement experience.

A 2015 graduate of Westland John Glenn High School, Officer Escobar served six years in the United States Army as a diesel mechanic. During his military career, he was stationed in South Korea, where he spent a year working side-by-side with the Republic of Korea Army to protect the Korean Peninsula.

Following an honorable discharge in 2021, he worked as a diesel mechanic in southeast Michigan before embarking on his career in law enforcement. In 2024, he joined the Detroit Police Department and graduated from the Detroit Police Academy in September 2024. Officer Escobar served the City of Detroit as a patrol officer in southwest Detroit before moving to downtown Detroit to serve as a patrol and special events officer.

Outside of his professional accomplishments, Officer Escobar and his fiancée have even more reason to celebrate—they just welcomed their first child, a baby daughter, earlier this month!

We are extremely fortunate to have Officer Escobar join our agency to help . Please join us in congratulating him and welcoming his family to Royal Oak!

The Royal Oak Police Department is proud to announce we are now participating in the State of Michigan’s VIP (Vulnerable or Impaired Person) Program.

Created under the "Bubba Bill", this voluntary initiative empowers Michigan law enforcement agencies to quickly identify lost or wandering individuals who may have cognitive impairments, or other special needs that create communication barriers, helping law enforcement officers reunite them with their families quickly, safely, and with dignity.

How the VIP Program Works:
• Fingerprint Identification: When officers have contact with an individual who is enrolled in the VIP program, they can scan an individual’s fingerprints on scene to immediately identify them and access emergency contact information for parents, guardians or other care providers.
• Statewide Database: While ROPD collects fingerprints, all other Information is submitted to the State of Michigan by the applicant’s representative. This information is stored in a secure State of Michigan repository to assist law enforcement across the state.
• Voluntary & Flexible: Parents, legal guardians, or powers of attorney control the enrollment process and can update or remove information as needed.

How to Enroll:
1. Download & Complete the Form: Visit www.michigan.gov/MSP-VIP to download and fill out the official VIP Program enrollment form before your visit and bring in the completed form with you when you come in. If you are unable to print and complete the form at home, copies will be available at the front desk.
2. Walk-In Processing Schedule: Walk-in applicants may be processed between the hours of 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM and 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM daily, seven days per week.

Once enrolled, the Michigan State Police will send a confirmation email containing instructions on how to update addresses, contact details, or photos in the future. For detailed information on the program, including its background, process and other questions, please visit https://www.michigan.gov/msp/services/vip

Another incredible ROPD Youth Academy is in the books!

Last Friday, we wrapped up another successful year with our young residents, capping things off with a high-energy morning alongside the Royal Oak Fire Department. Our students dove into hands-on first aid, CPR training, and injury response, before heading outside to get a close-up look at fire safety equipment and operations in action.

After sharing one final lunch as a group, our cadets proudly graduated in front of their friends and families.

Being able to have such a great relationship with our community doesn't happen in a vacuum, and our annual youth academy wouldn't be possible if it wasn't for the strong community partnerships we have and the efforts of our staff members who help put this on.

We would like to take the following members of the Royal Oak Community for their generosity and support in helping make this a special week for our future leaders:

Our youth academy sponsors John Farhat Homes, B & B Collision Corp. and Woodward Corner Market.

Our lunch sponsors Benito's Pizza Royal Oak - Order Pizza Delivery Online, Tania's Pizza, Chicken Shack, Barrels & Vines and KAL’s Lunch Bowl.

Special thanks to: the bus drivers of Royal Oak Seniors, our friends at Troy Gymnastics, the folks at Royal Oak Farmers Market and everyone at Royal Oak Golf Course for their support of our academy.

Last, but certainly not least, our own Sgt. Spangler, Ofc. Reece, Ofc. Gostiaux, Ofc. Lipscomb and Ofc. Stienke, who did a great job of leading this academy into another successful year. We couldn't do it without you. Thank you!

Young Royal Oakers, we'll see you next year Royal Oak.

Yesterday marked the penultimate day of the 2026 ROPD Youth Academy, and it was packed with action, critical thinking, and hands-on learning!

Our students started the day by meeting with Officer Jones and Officer Snyder to dive into the high-stakes world of SWAT operations and learn about what it takes to be an operator on the Oakland County Sheriff's Office SWAT team.

After refueling with a delicious lunch provided by Benito's Pizza of Royal Oak, the students got a firsthand look at how modern policing extends beyond the patrol car:

Students met with Co-Responder Fallone to learn about the Co-Responder (CoRe) Program, highlighting the vital partnership between mental health professionals and law enforcement.

Next, they met with Task Force Officers assigned to the Troy Special Investigations Unit (SIU)—a specialized task force comprised of Royal Oak PD and other area Oakland County law enforcement agencies to see how multi-jurisdictional teamwork solves complex cases.

Detective Meckl then took over to introduce the class to the detective bureau and evidence processing. Detective Meckl showed how detectives piece investigations together, before giving our students the chance to step up as junior evidence technicians to process a scene themselves.

Lastly, students put all their new knowledge to the test, and wrapped up the day with an interactive Tabletop Exercise, working together to strategize and coordinate how they would respond to a simulated bank robbery.

Later today, we will hold our official graduation ceremony, where these incredible students will receive their graduation certificates and some well-deserved keepsakes.

Thank you to our officers, community partners, and especially these amazing students for another day of teamwork, problem-solving, and fun!

Yesterday marked the halfway point of our 2026 ROPD Youth Academy, and it was another incredible day of fun, teamwork, and hands-on learning!

Our students had another opportunity to get a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to protect and serve their community, to include:

Defensive Tactics & Taser Training: Students learned subject control techniques and got a first-hand look at the equipment officers use to keep control of high-stress situations.

The MILO Simulator: Students got to put their decision-making skills to the test in realistic, split-second training scenarios.

Communication Center Operations: 911 Dispatcher Cameron stepped in to speak with the class, giving the students an eye-opening look at what our 911 Dispatchers handle on a daily basis to keep both the Royal Oak community and our responding officers safe.

With all that training, the academy worked up quite an appetite! A massive thank you to Tania's Pizza of Royal Oak for providing a fantastic, delicious lunch to refuel our future leaders.

We are so proud of the dedication these students are showing and it's hard to believe it's almost over.

Yesterday was Day 2 of the 2026 ROPD Youth Academy, and our students absolutely crushed it!

We started the morning with an eye-opening session on drunk driving awareness. Students got behind the wheel of a golf cart to tackle a challenging obstacle course—first normally, and then while wearing "drunk goggles" to experience firsthand how drastically impairment impacts coordination and reaction time.

After working up an appetite, the academy got a delicious fuel-up thanks to a generous lunch donation from Chicken Shack.

The afternoon was all about our K-9 Unit. Cadets learned the science and training behind how ROPD K-9s assist with tracking, as well as explosives and narcotics detection. The undisputed highlight of the day? Getting some quality 1-on-1 time (and plenty of pets) with K-9 Thorvi.

Another incredible day of learning, mentorship, and community connection with our future leaders.
