RENTAL ASSISTANCE: The Royal Oak City Commission has entered into contract with the South Oakland Shelter and Legal Aid & Defender Association to operate a rental assistance program on behalf of the city.

The program is designed to keep no, low- and moderate-income Royal Oak renters from being evicted. Many households have experienced a loss of employment or significant reduction in income due to COVID-19. Renters may be eligible for financial assistance for unpaid rent and/or utilities dating back no more than three months. Payments are made directly to landlords, not the renter household.

People in need of help may contact either of the below organizations.

I think it’s Saturday, but it’s Tuesday.
Afternoon has dragged on long enough
to be evening now, though the clock insists
it’s not yet three. No Zen retreat, no generative
challenge, this isolation feels like being lost.
Familiar landmarks of paychecks and plans, gone.
Signposts expected ahead keep disappearing from view.

When people lose their way in wilderness
their bodies react as if trapped, their minds as if going
mad. Rescuers say the lost exhibit universal behaviors.
We seek boundaries – a forest edge or lake shore.
We seek signs of civilization – a building or road.

Children are more likely to be found alive
because they slow down, take refuge.
Adults tend to keep moving. Lone men go on
longest and least often survive. Sometimes the lost
walk trance-like right past search parties. But
no organized rescue team searches for us now.
Instead we look out for one another. Can you hear me?
I’m calling your name. I will keep calling
through this wilderness until we all get out.

How parents respond will affect how kids respond.

Many of us will be embarking on a very challenging school year. I have three elementary aged kids that will be doing virtual learning. With the help of friends and family and teachers we’ll make it though! We will do the best we can and be kind to ourselves and others along the way.

Today, Royal Oak Youth Assistance provided 177 children summer fun, enrichment packets. These children are receiving bi-monthly food delivery from Blessings in a Backpack - Royal Oak. Our family education committee chair, Julie Semivan, coordinated purchasing and packaging yo-yos, journals, jump ropes, stress balls, crafting kits and bubbles. The Blessings volunteers delivered. It’s wonderful to work with other RO nonprofit groups to continue to support our Royal Oak families!
