Gilda’s Club has been part of the Royal Oak community for over 30 years, providing free support, education, resources, and a place of connection for people affected by cancer and their families, reminding us that no one has to fight alone.

Please come out on October 10th and support this great cause while watching some of your local firefighters and police officers face off!

All proceeds will be donated to help support programs at Gilda’s Club Metro Detroit.

Today, on the 25th anniversary of September 11, we pause to honor and remember the nearly 3,000 innocent lives lost on that fateful day. We remember the victims, their families, and the extraordinary bravery of the first responders, including our brother and sister firefighters and police officers, who ran toward danger without hesitation.

In our darkest hour, we saw the true spirit of America. We remember how a fractured nation pulled together, put differences aside, and stood as one.

Let us honor their memory today by showing kindness, compassion, and grace to those around us. Be a good neighbor, support one another, and carry forward the unity and resilience that defined us 25 years ago.

We will never forget!!

Royal Oak Firefighters are selling Breast Cancer Awareness shirts again! For the past 9 years, we have been selling shirts with 100% of the proceeds going to local, Royal Oak charities that help families affected by cancer. This year, all proceeds will be going to Gilda's Club in Royal Oak.

Yesterday, two of our on-duty firefighters, serving as members of the OAKWAY Technical Rescue Team, were called to assist with a trench rescue involving a victim who had become trapped.

Through extensive training, coordinated teamwork, and the combined efforts of all responding agencies, crews were able to safely remove the victim from the trench.

Technical rescue incidents require specialized training, equipment, and strong coordination between responders. We are proud of our firefighters and all of the members of the technical rescue team who worked together to bring this incident to a successful conclusion.

Great work by everyone involved!

Throwback Thursday, Royal Oak! 🔥

Check out that old photo, that's the gear we used to roll with back in the '60s. Long rubber coats, stiff leather boots that took forever to break in, old school helmets and SCBA units that were still pretty cutting edge for the time (yeah, we've been wearing air packs longer than you'd think).

Fast forward to today and it's a totally different world. Our gear now is built with stuff like Nomex and Kevlar, helmets that can take way more heat and our air tanks switched from steel to a lighter composite material, same air but way less weight dragging on your shoulders.

So, what changed? Honestly, it's what's inside people's houses now. Your grandparents' living room was wood, cotton, wool. Stuff that burned slow and were less toxic. Walk into a house today and it's practically an oil field from plastics, foam couches, engineered furniture. That stuff goes up fast, burns way hotter, and pumps out some genuinely nasty smoke. Our old gear just wasn't built for that fight.

We're talking temps that can hit 500°F or hotter at standing height in an active fire, and it only gets worse the higher up you go. So, when you see us decked out in all this gear, it's not for show, it is the only thing standing between us and both the heat and the toxic stuff in that smoke. It's why we get to go home at the end of the shift.
