A little bit of history on how this amazing Shenandoah National Park came to be. We are fortunate to be a neighbor. Tomorrow August 25th, is an Entrance Free Free Day to the park....plan to take a drive, hike or enjoy a picnic at one of the many overlooks.

On the third day of National Park Service Week, America in Motion Monday celebrates the impact of the car on the creation of Shenandoah National Park. Unlike the western parks that required a long and expensive train ride for most Americans, Shenandoah offered a destination within a day's drive for millions of people living in the East's urban centers. From its very first proposal, the park aimed to serve the middle class during the new age of the automobile. The park’s authorizing documents specifically recommended a "sky-line highway" as the key feature of the park. Even while driving today, you can enjoy the park as its founders intended!

Skyline Drive was an instant success. Each of the road's three districts opened—in 1934 (Central District), 1936 (North District) and 1939 (South District)—to enormous numbers of motorists. As a result of the Drive's popularity, newly established Shenandoah National Park led all National Park units in visitation by 1937, becoming the first national park to attract one million visitors.

Skyline Drive stretches 105 miles, starting from Front Royal in the north and reaching Rockfish Gap in the south. More than 70 overlooks line the drive, each offering different angles of the park—the Shenandoah Valley to the west and the Piedmont to the east. Driving the entire length of the park takes about three and a half hours without stopping, but you’ll want to stop! Pause for a view, set out on a hike or grab a meal at a wayside or lodge. If you have questions about anything you see, round out your trip with a visit to Dickey Ridge or Byrd Visitor Centers to ask a Ranger!
