District Positive Happenings for the Month of May
May has been another exciting month across our schools, filled with creativity, achievement, and hands-on learning experiences. Students showcased their talents and problem-solving skills through academic competitions, STEM challenges, writing contests, and real-world learning opportunities, earning recognition at the regional and state levels.

Across the district, students continued to explore learning in engaging and meaningful ways through classroom projects, career exploration experiences, collaborative activities, and outdoor educational events. From elementary classrooms to our secondary and career-focused programs, students demonstrated curiosity, teamwork, leadership, and innovation.

Our schools also celebrated student accomplishments in athletics, academics, and the arts while continuing to expand opportunities that support student growth and future success. Community partnerships, enrichment programs, and summer learning opportunities remain an important part of providing meaningful experiences for our students both inside and outside the classroom.

We are incredibly proud of our students, staff, families, and community partners for making May another outstanding month across our district.

Be sure to check out the attached document for highlights from each of our schools and programs!

Our students have recently been engaged in incredible hands-on learning experiences that highlight teamwork, environmental stewardship, creativity, and STEM exploration across our district!

Middle and high school teams from EMHS, SAEMS, WAHS, and YEMS recently gathered at Chapman Dam State Park to compete in the annual Envirothon competition. Students tested their knowledge in forestry, aquatics, wildlife, soils, and this year’s special topic: nonpoint pollution. While several teams earned top placements throughout the competition, the event also provided valuable experience and preparation for students interested in continuing Envirothon participation at the high school level and beyond. It was a beautiful day filled with collaboration, problem-solving, and outdoor learning.

In another exciting environmental effort, approximately 90 student volunteers joined teachers and community partners to plant nearly 700 trees at two locations in Warren County. Working alongside representatives from the Warren County Conservation District, DCNR, NRCS, and the Bureau of Forestry, students helped plant a diverse variety of deciduous trees and shrubs in areas near Youngsville, Garland, and the Hatch Run Conservation Trail. This project provided students with a meaningful opportunity to support conservation efforts while learning more about environmental sustainability and habitat restoration.

Students and families also recently participated in a Future Quest event as part of the worldwide Remake Learning Days celebration. This hands-on STEM event encouraged curiosity, creativity, and exploration through interactive stations focused on energy, motion, and engineering concepts. Participants experimented with catapults, gravity, circuits, solar and wind power, 3D building challenges, sensors, and other engaging activities designed to spark innovation and problem-solving. We were excited to see participation grow significantly this year as more families joined in the fun and learning.

We are proud of our students, staff, and community partners for continuing to create meaningful experiences that inspire learning both inside and outside the classroom!

Our last (May) nominee for the Northwest PA C.L.A.S.S. Act Emerging Leader is Julia Schultz, WAHS Senior. On behalf of the WCSD, we want to congratulate Julia on this nomination and are hoping for a potential May scholarship selection by the IU #5 and Scholarship Committee.

School Counselor, Lori Hahn stated the following regarding the IUS Class Act May 2026 Emerging Leader Nominee, Julia Schultz, “I am delighted to recommend Julia Schultz for the CLASS Act Emerging Leader Program. Having known her for the past two years in my capacity as a counselor and supervisor in the Counseling Office, I have been consistently impressed by her maturity and commitment. Julia has worked with us diligently during both her junior and senior years, demonstrating a level of emotional intelligence that goes beyond her peers”

Being a Counseling Office worker demands a great deal of discretion, as these student helpers can often find
themselves in the midst of sensitive situations. Julia has handled each instance with calmness and
professionalism, maintaining the confidentiality of her peers with dignity and respect. One particular occasion
stands out in my mind: during a challenging day when our office was overwhelmed, Julia took the initiative to
distract the other students who were in the office working at the computers in order to provide the student in
crisis privacy.

Julia is a student who once she commits to a task, she gives it her all and will do everything to make it successful.
Whether it be organizing a whole school assembly for Student Council, initiating a food drive for Key Club, or
decorating for Prom, Julia is a student who accomplishes each task with maximum effort. Additionally, as the
social media manager for Student Council, she works tirelessly to promote school events and foster school spirit.

Her enthusiasm and organizational skills are equally matched by her academic interest in pursuing a career in
pharmacy. Julia has worked after school and on weekends at Gaughn’s Pharmacy in order to prepare herself for
not only college but her career. She will be attending the University of Pittsburgh with a concentration in pharmacy. This career path also requires a high level of emotional maturity and confidentiality, which I know that Julia would be able to handle after watching her in our office.

In granting Julia the CLASS Act Award, you are investing in a young woman who possesses not only the intellect
but also, the heart to make a significant impact in her future endeavors. I have no doubt that she will continue to
grow and lead with the same grace and integrity that she has shown throughout her time with us.

Reminder: Kindergarten Roundup is right around the corner for SAEMS! The final WCSD Kindergarten Roundup session will be this Thursday, May 21st, at Sheffield Area Elementary Middle School from 2:00-6:00 PM. Each elementary school will host a Kindergarten Roundup session so interested parents can meet with various people to learn more about kindergarten and complete helpful screenings. Please see the flyer below or visit the Registration tab on the district webpage (https://www.wcsdpa.org/o/wcsd/page/registration) for more information. If you know someone else with a child ready for kindergarten, please share the information with them.

Kindergarten registration for the upcoming school year is open—and it’s all online. We encourage families to register as soon as possible. Late registrations can lead to last-minute classroom or teacher changes, which can be frustrating for families. Registering early helps us create stable placements and a smooth start to the school year. Visit the Registration tab on the district webpage for more information.

*Parents with poor internet connectivity at home are encouraged to contact the Registration Office to schedule an appointment to complete the online registration at Central Office. 814-723-6900 Ext. 1027
