NEW KENTUCKY SCHOOL BUS SAFETY LAW

As students head back to school, we need to give all our drivers the heads up about important changes to Kentucky’s school bus stopping law, effective July 15, 2026.

The New Rule:
Drivers must stop for a school or church bus displaying its stop arm and flashing red lights from either direction on all roads.

The only exception: You do not have to stop when traveling in the opposite direction on a roadway with four or more lanes that is separated by an elevated barrier or an unpaved median. Just to be clear, you must stop in all lanes on four lane highways with a paved center turn lane.

If there is no physical barrier or unpaved median, you must stop—even on a four-lane road.

Vehicle Owner Responsibility:
If a driver illegally passes a stopped school bus and cannot be identified, Kentucky law now presumes the registered owner or lessee was driving and subjects them to the penalties provided by law unless that presumption is rebutted.

The Russellville Police Department wants to remind residents of a recent uptick in thefts from vehicles in our community.

Help us help you — here’s what you can do to protect your property:

🔒 Lock your vehicle every time, even in your own driveway
🔑 Never leave your keys in the car
👜 Remove valuables or keep them out of sight
👀 Stay observant — if you see something suspicious in your neighborhood, say something

A few simple habits go a long way in preventing crimes of opportunity. If you notice any suspicious activity, please contact the Russellville Police Department.

South Owen Street: located between the Logan County Justice Center and the post office

Well, this is a first! This sweet little pig was found near the Flying Pig Coffee Shop, wearing a pink harness, but no sign of an owner yet.

She’s safe, sleepy, and clearly living her best “waiting room nap” life right now. If she’s yours (or you know whose she is), please reach out to us ASAP so we can get her back home!

Samuel Piper on successfully completing the 122-hour Academy of Police Supervision, Class #107, at the Department of Criminal Justice Training (DOCJT). APS is a rigorous three-week leadership development program tailored for newly promoted sergeants. The curriculum covers essential skills including effective group influence, situational leadership, constitutional and administrative law, emotional and social intelligence, ethical decision-making, problem-solving strategies, emotional survival techniques, and public speaking proficiency.
