For this week’s Loan Fund Friday, we are looking at UHDC Self-Help Housing project—where a HAC SHOP loan helped make homeownership possible for 10 families across five rural Arkansas counties.
Through this partnership, Universal Housing Development Corporation (UHDC) acquired 10 scattered site lots for use in their self-help housing program. Families selected their own building locations and worked together under skilled supervision, contributing hundreds of hours of labor to build their homes—reducing costs, gaining valuable skills, and strengthening communities across Conway, Johnson, Logan, Pope, and Yell Counties.
All 10 homes are finished, occupied, and the loan has been fully repaid. The new homes range from 1,250 to 1,545 square feet, are energy-efficient with Energy Star appliances and WaterSense fixtures, and are affordable to families earning under 50% of the area median income.
