SATURDAY NIGHT UPDATE: A MAJOR Winter Storm - quite possibly Bowling Green's biggest in years - is taking shape for Sunday night into Monday. We still expect rain to develop across South-Central KY with a transition to freezing rain/sleet for areas north of the Western KY Parkway during the early afternoon. That transtion will work SE across the rest of the area during the evening.
*POTENTIAL FOR SIGNIFICANT ICING* is there for ALL of South-Central KY Sun evening/night. Ice amounts could reach into the 1/2"-1" range tomorrow night. Glazing that heavy would greatly weigh down trees and power lines, potentially resulting in outages. For many, this could be the most amount of icing seen since the Ice Storm of 2009. A transition to sleet and then snow is expected early Monday morning before the event ends Monday afternoon. Significant snow/sleet accumulation is likely on top of any icing we receive. Much uncertainty remains on snow totals, as those will be highly dependent on when the coldest of air arrives late tomorrow night along with how much moisture is around when it does.
In this event, YOU WILL WANT TO HOPE FOR A QUICK TRANSITION FROM FREEZING RAIN TO EITHER SLEET OR SNOW!! Freezing rain is what glazes outdoor objects and creates the most dangerous conditions. Sleet falls as small ice pellets, and while it can cause hazardous travel in its own right, sleet does not collect on power lines like freezing rain does. Something to keep in mind as we get into tomorrow night.
I STRONGLY URGE EVERYONE TO FINISH PRE-STORM PREPARATIONS BY SUNDAY EVENING! Conditions will rapidly deteriorate tomorrow night when temperatures drop into the 20s and the wintry mix moves in.
Keep checking with Chris, Stephanie, and myself through the rest of the weekend as we track what is shaping up to be a very big, very impactful Winter Storm!
