If you're planning to kayak, canoe, or float Big Piney Creek, please use extra caution on the Long Pool to Twin Bridges section.

A hazardous area has developed near the end of the run due to bank erosion and changing river conditions. Strong currents in this area are pushing paddlers toward overhanging vegetation and strainers, creating a serious risk of entrapment. Even experienced paddlers have reported close calls.

Before heading out:
🛶 Always wear a properly fitted life jacket.
🛶 Stay alert and watch for changing river conditions.
🛶 Scout rapids and obstacles when possible.
🛶 Avoid overhanging trees, root wads, and strainers, as current can push paddlers into them quickly.
🛶 Paddle with a group whenever possible and let someone know your float plan.
🛶 Keep children and inexperienced paddlers away from hazardous areas.

River conditions can change rapidly due to erosion, high water, and fallen vegetation. Please use caution, share this information with others planning a trip, and help keep everyone safe on the water.

There’s a bad spot on the Long Pool to Twin Bridges run, anyone that has been on it lately will know what I’m talking about. We warn everybody we see, but we don’t see everyone that has their own boat. It’s not too far above the Bridges, so it’s close to the end. It’s where the bank is caving in from erosion on river right, the red clay bank. There’s a willow jungle as you enter the rapid & it’s pushing you HARD into the willows on river left. You HAVE to paddle HARD to keep from getting washed into them. It’s dangerous & there have been some very close calls on it lately. One guy with his own boat told me he thought he was going to drown yesterday. I have heard reports of people getting their clothes snagged in them & having to be rescued by someone on the Creek behind them. Even seasoned paddlers are being caught unaware of the strong current. Please spread the word. It’s no joke. BE CAREFUL! Until this is remedied in some way we will not put kids on the Creek! Please plan accordingly!

Smokey knows best. Drown, stir and feel to fully extinguish your campfire. If it’s too hot to touch, it’s too hot to leave.

What is clean water from Southern forests worth?

New Forest Service research shows how Southern forests help reduce drinking water treatment costs by protecting water quality.
