I read a statement the other day and it got me thinking.. the statement was ā€œone of the best recruitment strategies is simply taking care of the Firefighters you already haveā€
Let me just say Nothing is simply in the Fire service… there are always financial issues, needed Equipment, keeping the trucks operational when you have 10 drivers driving them. The biggest issue of all is keeping the smoke out of the Firehouse.. 30 people 30 different personalities and 30 different opinions on how to do things correctly. It can be exhausting as a chief to balance all of these things and keep your sanity..Here is what I have learned over the years…

Unfortunately, some members will never be happy! 10% of any organization will always be negative, but as officers we spend 90% of our time on the negative 10%! As leaders, we need to spend 90% of our attention on the 90% that are positive. We have several Firefighters that have stuck it out thru the thick and thin as their lives change so do their priorities. It’s the facts in the world of a volunteer. When there is no dependency on a paycheck it comes to heart and being mature enough to handle the 10% that are jumping up and down.. sometimes one or two of those finally grow up and make good Firefighters some need to go flip burgers for a hobby.. because what we do matters… it’s life changing to those we serve…The majority of fire departments are volunteers.. The fires are the same but the managing dynamics of the team are totally different! The few that are truly chosen for service hold the rest of the organization together. The Leadership in a volunteer can only do so much.. you can’t get rid of all the 10% or you will be insufficient to do the job our community expects. In my tenure as a volunteer Fire Chief I have tried to w**d out those that were toxic and asked the rest to evaluate themselves and ask the question why are you Here? By asking that question and making an examination of themselves they know it’s time to leave…It’s not always the leaders although bad leaders can be a Huge issue it can be the hearts of those who come in and out the doors.. sometimes ask yourself why are you here? What are you contributing to the service??? Like I said it not a simple solution to fix all the issues but it starts with YOU… instead of complaining come up with solutions and Don’t be that 10% that creates smoke in the firehouse. I am truly Thankful for the faithful servants we have at RRFD… The ones who step up without complaint because they know what they do makes a difference! They keep the mission in focus.. Remember it’s not about you… it’s about US…The Team!
Just my thoughts for the day.. God Bless,
Chief Allen

Russellville Rural FD was dispatched to a single vehicle accident with injuries and entrapment this morning. We were assisted by Lewisburg Fire Department, Russellville City FD, Logan Aluminum FD, Logan Co. Sheriff’s Department and Logan Co EMS. We had two patients entrapped in critical condition. Both patients were extracted and transported by Air E Vac. We would like to thank all the different agencies and bystanders who assisted with this incident. Great Team work by all! We send our prayers to the patients and hope for a complete recovery. It appeared according to bystanders the vehicle had a tire that blew out causing the wreck.

Today Duane Spencers family laid his body to rest. We would like to thank all the folks that brought out their fire trucks in honor of Duane’s 17 years of service on the Russellville Rural Fire Department. He would have been so impressed at all the classic cars, Fire Trucks, search and rescue, police vehicles and friends that showed up today and we gave him a big ol sounding of the Q siren on our way out.. RIP Firefighter 559 Spencer! Thank you for your service to Logan County!
