This week, Mayor Ronny Walker was invited to speak at the unveiling of a historical marker honoring fighter pilot Gerald McCallum, who sacrificed his own life for a fellow soldier and became the first Lincoln Parish serviceman killed in World War II.

Members of McCallum’s family were also present for the unveiling as the community gathered to honor his life, service, and sacrifice.

The marker is located between the North Louisiana Military Museum and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall on Memorial Drive in Ruston.

THE 411 ON N11 NUMBERS

You’ve probably heard of 911, but what about 211, 411 or 811? These three-digit numbers are called N11 service codes, and each one can connect you with a different type of service or information.

Here’s a quick guide to keep handy:

📞211 — Community Resources/United Way
Need help finding local resources for essential needs? 211 is a free and confidential service that can connect you with community services in your area.

📞311 — Non-Emergency City Services
Some communities use 311 to connect residents with non-emergency city services and public works. Ruston doesn’t use 311, but we do have a direct line to help you reach the City for these types of needs: 318-242-7700.

📞411 — Directory Assistance
Looking for a phone number or contact information? 411 connects you with directory assistance.

📞511 — Road & Traffic Information
Planning a trip or wondering about road conditions? Call 511 for transportation, traffic and roadway updates.

📞611 — Wireless Customer Service
Need help with your cell phone service? 611 connects you with your wireless provider’s customer service team for things like billing questions or service issues.

📞711 — Telecommunications Relay Services
711 helps connect people who are deaf, hard of hearing or have speech disabilities with relay services through TTY or similar communication devices.

📞811 — Call Before You Dig
Planning to dig? Call 811 first. It helps residents and contractors identify underground gas, electric, water and communication lines before work begins.

📞911 — Emergency Services
When you need immediate help, 911 connects you with emergency services, including police, fire and emergency medical services (EMS).

Knowing which number to call can help you quickly connect with the right resource when you need it.

TRASH ≠ GARBAGE

Did you know there’s a difference between trash and garbage?

It’s easy to use the words interchangeably, but when it comes to the City of Ruston’s Solid Waste Collection services, they refer to different things.

Garbage is what goes inside your garbage container, your regular household garbage.

Trash refers to items collected separately, such as debris piles, tree limbs, grass, loose leaves, pine straw, hedge trimmings, household goods and appliances. These items have specific requirements for how they should be placed for pickup.

Knowing the difference can help make sure your items are placed correctly and picked up when they’re supposed to be.
