First Responders Strengthen Incident Command Skills

Public safety is one of our highest priorities, and here in St. Martin Parish, we are committed to making sure our first responders are prepared when our community needs them most.

Effective coordination during an emergency doesn’t just happen—it is built through training, teamwork, and strong partnerships.

This week, first responders from the St. Martin Parish Sheriff's Office and St. Martin Parish Government attended ICS-300: Intermediate Incident Command System for Expanding Incidents training, hosted by the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (GOHSEP) and ULL’s NIMSAT Institute.

Training together makes a difference. It strengthens relationships between agencies, improves communication and coordination, and ensures our responders are prepared to operate as one unified team when major incidents or disasters impact St. Martin Parish.

Prepared responders help build a safer, more resilient St. Martin Parish.

September is National Preparedness Month, a time dedicated to reminding everyone about the importance of being ready before an emergency or disaster occurs.

Preparedness starts with simple steps—knowing the risks in our area, having an emergency plan, keeping essential supplies on hand, staying informed, and knowing how to respond when severe weather threatens.

Here in St. Martin Parish, hurricanes, flooding, severe thunderstorms, and other emergencies can happen with little notice, so taking the time now to prepare can make a significant difference when every minute counts.
