Destigmatizing learning to swim as an adult is an important step for promoting water safety and overall well-being for the general population. Drowning is an epidemic around the world, causing it to be the 3rd leading cause of unintentional injury death world wide.

Learning to swim as an adult brings numerous benefits beyond water safety. It is a fantastic form of exercise, promoting cardiovascular health, muscle strength, and flexibility. Swimming can also be a great stress reliever and boost mental well-being.
By sharing statistics and stories demonstrating the commonness of adult non-swimmers, we can help individuals understand that they are not the exception but rather part of a larger group seeking to learn.

Many adults never had the opportunity as a child to learn-to-swim, which is why it shouldn’t be stigmatized as something shameful or near embarrassing.

Drowning has no age limit, and no one is ever drown proof. Always learn and use the 5 Layers of Protection when in and around water.

Know an adult that doesn’t know how to swim? Encourage them to sign up for basic swimming instruction to further their knowledge – it could save a life!

Being a water watcher involves more than sitting and observing. Follow the 15-minute rule to manage your supervision and keep everyone safe.

Here's how it works:

1️⃣ Change Positions or Water Watchers: Every 15 minutes, shift your position or trade places with a capable adult around the pool or water area. This allows you to have a fresh perspective and better visibility of all swimmers.

2️⃣ Active Scanning: Be sure to actively scan the water and surroundings. Keep a watchful eye on every swimmer and be aware of any potential hazards or obstructions.

3️⃣ Clear Areas: As you change positions, take a moment to clear any areas that may obstruct your line of sight or impede a potential rescue. Remove toys, floatation devices, or other objects that could hinder a safe response.

By practicing the 15-minute rule, you actively engage in continuous water supervision, ensuring the safety of those in and around the water. Stay vigilant, stay proactive, and be ready to respond if needed!
