Broad River Water Authority Sharing highlights of your hometown water provider! Stay updated on the latest news & outages.

Broad River Water Authority (BRWA) is a local government water and sewer authority founded in 1999 by town officials who had a vision for local control of their own water resources. The young company issued bonds and purchased the Duke Power Company's Rutherford Water System in December 2000. The water system includes a modern water plant location on our water source, the Broad River, one of the c

leanest and most dependable rivers in North Carolina. The distribution system serves the Towns of Ruth, Rutherfordton, and Spindale; and many other areas of the county such as the Cliffside and Harris communities. BRWA also provides water to Polk County, Inman Campobello Water District (Spartanburg County, SC), and Grassy Pond Water Company (Cherokee County, SC). BRWA is overseen by a Board of eight directors appointed by the Towns of Ruth, Rutherfordton, and Spindale and Rutherford County. Meetings, which are open to the public, are held the fouth Tuesday of each month at 5:15 pm at the Rutherfordton Town Hall.

Last week, some of our team attended the North Carolina Rural Water Association (NCRWA) conference!

They had the opportunity to attend educational sessions, network with industry professionals, and represent BRWA in several exciting ways. We even entered a team in the hydrant competition — while we didn’t bring home first place, our crew gave it a valiant effort and represented us well! 💪🚒

We are also incredibly proud of Matt W., who completed his apprenticeship this past December and was recognized at the conference alongside his mentor, Dustin, for their hard work and dedication to the program. 👏

In addition, our Executive Director, Maria, led two phenomenal conference sessions — Women in Water and the Closing Session.

We’re proud of our team for continuing to grow, learn, and invest in the future of our industry. We’re excited to see them apply the knowledge and experience gained at conference to the dedicated work they do every day here at BRWA! 💧

🌎VOLUNTARY WATER CONSERVATION REQUEST🌎

Due to ongoing drought conditions across Western North Carolina, we are asking customers to voluntarily conserve water to help protect our shared water supply.

Simple ways to help:
đźšżTake shorter showers
đź’§Turn off faucets when not in use
🗑️Run full loads of laundry/dishes only
🌱Limit outdoor watering
đźš—Reduce car washing
🚫Avoid washing driveways, sidewalks, and patios
⏳Delay new landscaping work

Small changes make a big difference and help us reduce demand while protecting the Broad River water source.

Thank you for helping us conserve water!

đź’§ FAQ of the Month đź’§
Why does my water look cloudy?

Cloudy water is often the result of air becoming trapped in the water system, especially after changes in water flow, pressure, or recent maintenance. When this happens, tiny air bubbles can give your water a white or cloudy appearance.

In most cases, this is temporary and not a safety concern. Try filling a clear glass and letting it sit—if the water clears from the bottom up, it’s just air bubbles.

However, if the cloudiness doesn’t go away or looks more like discoloration, it could be something else. Feel free to reach out to us so we can take a closer look.
