🎉 Please Join Us in Welcoming Carli McBride as Rutherfordton's New Main Street Coordinator! 🎉

Downtown Rutherfordton continues to thrive thanks to the dedication of our small businesses, volunteers, property owners, and community partners. As we continue building on that momentum, the Town of Rutherfordton and Rutherford Town Rising are excited to welcome Carli McBride as our new Main Street Coordinator.

The Town is also grateful for the contributions of Miranda Parker during her time as Main Street Coordinator. Miranda helped build strong momentum for downtown initiatives and community engagement, and we wish her continued success as she begins an exciting new chapter in her career.

Carli brings a passion for community engagement, local economic development, and relationship-building, along with a professional background in education that has equipped her with strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.

Originally from Ohio, Carli made Rutherfordton her home five years ago and quickly became invested in the community she now proudly serves. Through her active involvement with the Rutherford County Farmers Market, she has developed strong connections with local farmers, artisans, small business owners, and community members. Her appreciation for supporting local businesses and creating meaningful community experiences aligns perfectly with the mission of the Main Street program.

As Main Street Coordinator, Carli will work alongside downtown businesses, property owners, volunteers, residents, and our partners at Rutherford Town Rising to celebrate Rutherfordton's unique character while fostering growth and opportunity. She is passionate about creating welcoming events and memorable experiences that encourage people to shop, dine, and gather in downtown Rutherfordton while supporting the nearly 100 small businesses that make our downtown such a special place.

"Downtown Rutherfordton has experienced tremendous momentum over the last several years, and that success is the result of strong partnerships, dedicated business owners, volunteers, and a community that believes in supporting local," said Doug Barrick, Town Manager. "Carli brings the energy, creativity, and relationship-building skills needed to continue that work. Having already immersed herself in our community through the Farmers Market and local events, she understands what makes Rutherfordton special and is ready to help write the next chapter of our downtown story. We are excited to welcome her to our team and look forward to the impact she will have on Downtown Rutherfordton."

Carli shared, "I am honored to serve as Rutherfordton's Main Street Coordinator and look forward to building relationships throughout the community. Outside of her professional role, Carli enjoys gardening, traveling, and attending local festivals and community events. These interests have deepened her appreciation for the vibrant culture and sense of community that make Rutherfordton such a special place to live and work.

Main Street is the heart of Rutherfordton, and Carli's passion for community, collaboration, and supporting local businesses makes her a natural fit for this important role. We are excited for the future of Downtown Rutherfordton and look forward to the relationships, partnerships, events, and opportunities that lie ahead.

A Final Look Inside the Greenway House

Before the Greenway House was removed, the Town worked to document the home through photography, drone imagery, and interactive walkthroughs to preserve its history for future generations.

This video provides one final look at the exterior and interior of a home that stood in Rutherfordton for more than 140 years. Historic features, including doors, hardware, fireplace mantles, and other architectural elements, were carefully salvaged to help preserve the home's legacy. Remembering the Greenway House — Preserving the Past While Planning for the Future.

For well over a century, the Greenway House stood along South Washington Street as part of the history of Rutherfordton and the legacy of a family whose roots remain deeply connected to our community.

Originally constructed in 1883, the home was a contributing structure within the Rutherfordton Historic District. Like many historic buildings, time eventually took its toll. After decades of vacancy and deterioration, the Town worked with the Rutherfordton Historic Preservation Commission and Preservation North Carolina to explore every reasonable option for preservation, relocation, or reuse.

Over the course of a year, the property was marketed through Preservation North Carolina's Endangered Properties Program, historic documentation was completed, and architectural elements were salvaged for future preservation efforts. Despite those efforts, no viable relocation or restoration proposal emerged.

While the house is no longer standing, its history has been preserved through extensive photography, drone imagery, floor plans, and interactive walkthroughs. In addition, the Town carefully salvaged numerous historic features from the home, including doors, hardware, fireplace mantles, and other architectural elements. These pieces will be preserved for future use, helping ensure that the legacy of the Greenway House and its contribution to our community continues long after the structure itself is gone.

The Greenway House is also part of a much larger vision for the former Rutherfordton Elementary School campus. The Town continues to work toward the long-term revitalization and repurposing of this important community asset as a future Municipal Complex that will serve residents for generations to come.

That vision has faced unexpected challenges. Hurricane Helene caused more than $2.5 million in damage to the former school campus and associated facilities, significantly impacting the project's timeline. Today, the Town is actively working with FEMA and other funding partners to secure the resources needed to repair and restore these buildings so this community vision can continue moving forward.

As we look back through these photographs, we do so with gratitude for the Greenway family's place in Rutherfordton's history and appreciation for the many stories connected to this home. While the structure itself is gone, its legacy remains an important part of our community's story.

The past helped shape Rutherfordton. The future will build upon it.

This Pollinator Month, Rutherfordton PARC invites you to explore the pollinator-friendly gardens at Main Street Park, Marshall Dog Park, and Norris Park.

These gardens have been planted with intention to provide nectar, pollen, and habitat for bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and other pollinators that play a vital role in keeping our ecosystems healthy. As you visit, take a closer look—you may spot pollinators hard at work among the blooms!

Even small actions, like planting native flowers at home, can help support these important species and create healthier habitats throughout our community.

🚛 We're Back! 🌳

Public Works Director Cory Hall and Town Mechanic Matt Arrowood welcomed Rutherfordton's new grapple truck today as it officially joined the fleet.

Built on a dependable Hino chassis and equipped with a Petersen TL-3 Lightning Loader, this truck will help our crews efficiently collect limbs, brush, and storm debris throughout town for years to come.

A special thank you to the Town of Spindale, NC for loaning us their grapple truck while we awaited delivery of this replacement unit. Your assistance helped us continue serving residents and reduce the backlog following the loss of our previous truck.

We appreciate everyone's patience and look forward to getting caught back up on collections across Rutherfordton.

🚒 Progress Update: Rutherfordton's New Fire Engine! 🚒

We're excited to share the latest photos of Rutherfordton Fire & Rescue Department's newest engine as it leaves Spartan and heads to Smeal for installation of the pump, body, and firefighting equipment.

Built on a Spartan Metro Star chassis and powered by a Cummins L9 450 HP engine, the new apparatus will feature a 1,500 GPM Hale pump, 1,000-gallon water tank, foam system, and Opticom and HAAS Alert technology.

Expected to arrive later this fall, this engine will replace a 2000 Pierce Saber that has faithfully served our community for more than 25 years. Once placed in service, it will become the first-out engine company at Station 1.

This Engine, along with the Town's new 107-foot aerial ladder truck arriving later this month, represents a major investment in our public safety fleet. These apparatus will improve reliability, firefighter safety, response capabilities, and ensure our department has the tools needed to serve Rutherfordton and the surrounding fire district for years to come.

Stay tuned as we follow the build process and bring this new engine home later this year!

Juneteenth Vendor Spotlight!

The Juneteenth Freedom Day Celebration is shaping up to be a great day in Rutherfordton, and we are excited about the amazing vendors who will be joining the fun at Kiwanis Park on June 19!

🍖 Ben's Smokehouse will be serving up some of the area's favorite barbecue and smoked specialties. If you've heard people talking about Ben's, now is your chance to find out what all the excitement is about. Trust us, his food is worth the trip!

🛍️ Beyond the great food, visitors can enjoy a variety of local artisans, community organizations, specialty vendors, and small businesses offering everything from handmade goods and crafts to information about services and programs available throughout our community.

🎶 Add in live entertainment, family activities, community fellowship, and a celebration of culture and history, and you have all the ingredients for a fantastic day in Rutherfordton.

Young Visions of America Now on Display in Main Street Park!

This summer, Main Street Park is showcasing creativity, community pride, and youthful perspectives through Young Visions of America, a special public art installation created by students from the R-S Central High School AP 2-D Art Class in celebration of America 250.

Students were challenged to create original designs reflecting the spirit, history, and future of Rutherfordton while connecting our community's story to the larger American experience. The result is a collection of thoughtful and inspiring works that highlight hometown pride, cultural heritage, natural beauty, and the vision of the next generation.

Special thanks to R-S Central Art Teacher Addie Harris-Trull for her leadership and guidance throughout the project.

"The first AP 2-D Art and Design class at R-S Central High School was honored to collaborate with the Town of Rutherfordton on a mural project for America 250," said Harris-Trull. "Students submitted visual proposals representing the past, present, and future of Rutherfordton within the larger American narrative and worked together to bring those visions to life."

“This installation emphasizes the power of young artists to shape public spaces and contribute to community identity,” said Lindy Abrams of Rutherfordton PARC. “By giving students a platform in Main Street Park, we’re not only celebrating a national milestone, we’re also fostering local creativity.”

We invite everyone to visit Main Street Park, explore the artwork, and experience Rutherfordton through the eyes of our community's young artists.

Young Visions of America is part of the ongoing Art in the Park initiative, a collaboration between Rutherford Town Rising and Rutherfordton PARC that brings rotating public art displays to Main Street Park and celebrates creativity throughout our community.
