Today, on Memorial Day, we pause to remember and honor the men and women who gave their lives in service to our nation. Memorial Day is more than the start of summer, it is a day of reflection, gratitude, and remembrance for those who never made it home.

Their sacrifice secured the freedoms we enjoy today, and their stories deserve to be remembered for generations to come.

This November, our community will have the extraordinary honor of hosting The Wall That Heals at the ICC Soccer Fields in Spindale, November 12–15, 2026.

The Wall That Heals is far more than a traveling exhibit. It is a living memorial and educational experience that brings the stories, sacrifices, and lasting impacts behind the 58,281 names etched on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. directly to communities across America.

For many veterans and families, this experience is deeply personal. For some, it may be the first time they truly feel welcomed home.

The memorial experience includes:
• A three-quarter scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial
• The Mobile Education Center, sharing the stories behind the names
• The In Memory Program honoring Vietnam veterans who returned home and later passed away
• A digital display recognizing our Hometown Heroes, The Rutherford 10
• Educational opportunities for schools, churches, and civic groups

Not every veteran or family has the opportunity to travel to Washington, D.C. That is why bringing The Wall here matters so deeply, we are bringing healing home.

The event will be free and open to the public 24 hours a day beginning November 11 through November 15.

Every life mattered. Every name tells a story. Every story deserves to be remembered.

Today, the Town of Rutherfordton joins our community and our nation in observing Memorial Day, a solemn day of remembrance for the men and women of the United States Armed Forces who gave their lives in service to our country.

This is a day of reflection above all else.

We pause to honor the sacrifice of those who never returned home. Their courage secured the freedoms we live with today, and their legacy continues to live on in every community, including here in Rutherfordton. Freedom has never been free. It has always been carried by those who gave everything.

As we reflect, we are also reminded that we are part of a continuing American story, one that will reach a historic milestone with America 250, the 250th anniversary of the United States.

Here in Rutherford County, that story will be honored this Independence Day through a shared community celebration.

On July 4, 2026, all seven municipalities in the county, along with Rutherford County and the Rutherford County TDA, will come together for a countywide celebration, the America 250 Rutherford County Celebration . The evening will feature a large fireworks display at the Isothermal Community College around Lake Imogene, along with family activities and community gathering areas across the county. Fireworks are scheduled to begin around 9:30pm

Earlier that day, at 10:00 AM in downtown Rutherfordton at Court Street and North Main Street, the Town will dedicate the Overmountain Men Statue. This monument will honor the Overmountain Men and the local folks who supported their journey through this region during the Revolutionary War. Their story is part of the larger story of American independence and the freedom we continue to honor today.

But today is not about celebration.

Today is about remembrance.

We honor those who gave their lives in service. We remember their sacrifice. And we give thanks for the freedom they secured for all of us.

From all of us at the Town of Rutherfordton, we wish you a safe, meaningful, and reflective Memorial Day

This week marked the final week of the Rutherfordton Little League -D1, NC regular season, and it ended on a high note with a fun, friendly matchup between the Rutherfordton Police Department and Rutherfordton Fire & Rescue Department.

Both departments proudly sponsored teams this season, and the game featured the Dodgers (Rutherfordton Police) taking on the D-Backs (Fire Department). The stands were filled with support from Chief Ingle of the Police Department and Chief Harrill of the Fire Department, cheering alongside their teams throughout the game.

Adding to the community spirit, Mayor Dancy’s grandson Jackson was on the field, holding down first base for the Dodgers.

In a spirited, hit-filled game, the Police Department came away with the win, but the real victory was the sense of community, teamwork, and support on display.

As the regular season comes to a close, a special thank you goes out to all the volunteer coaches, parents, and organizers who make Little League possible, and most importantly to the players for their hard work, sportsmanship, and energy all season long. These are the moments and memories that help build a strong community both on and off the field.

Great season, Dodgers and D-Backs and thank you to everyone who made it possible.

🚒 Rutherfordton Fire Department is adding new technology designed to make emergency responses safer for everyone on the road.

As North Carolina observes the statewide “Move Over” enforcement campaign, reinforcing the importance of slowing down and moving over for emergency vehicles stopped or operating on our roadways.

The department has started deploying Safety Cloud® by HAAS Alert, a system that sends digital alerts to nearby drivers when emergency vehicles are responding with lights and sirens activated. Drivers using apps like Waze and Apple Maps and even some newer vehicle dashboard systems may now receive warnings before they ever see an emergency vehicle or roadside scene ahead.

The first Rutherfordton apparatus equipped with the system is Squad 26 the main Engine Company from Fire Station 1, with additional units planned as new apparatus enter service later this year, including Ladder 26 and the replacement for Engine 2611. The Rutherfordton Police Department is also exploring future deployment opportunities as additional patrol vehicles are added to the fleet.

As Rutherfordton continues to grow, traffic volumes increase, and distracted driving becomes more common, protecting responders working on busy roadways is more important than ever, especially along major corridors and the future US 221 Bypass.

“This technology gives motorists another layer of warning and awareness when our crews are operating on busy roadways,” said Fire Chief Brandon Harrill. “Every second of additional warning time can help make the scene safer for responders and the public.”

These upgrades are part of Rutherfordton’s broader investment in modern, reliable, and fuel-efficient public safety vehicles and equipment, much of it supported through grant funding to help reduce costs to taxpayers.

For firefighters, police officers, and emergency personnel working on the roadside, a few extra seconds of driver awareness can be the difference between a safe response and a dangerous situation. This technology is designed to create that extra margin of safety helping drivers react earlier, slow down sooner, and better protect the people working to protect our community. 🚒🚓
