Ryan was a member here at Green Hill FD before he went to Forestry School, we’re proud of the accomplishments you have achieved and always glad to work alongside you when we come to Polk County to assist.

This is Ryan Searcy. Ryan works as the N.C. Forest Service Polk County Ranger, providing wildfire response for the 238 square miles of the county where he was born and raised. Ryan has worked with the N.C. Forest Service since 2006 and has fought fire all over the U.S. When a fallen powerline started the Wednesday, March 19, Ryan assumed command of the fire, trying to stop its spread as the fire burned through Helene blowdown in high winds and steep terrain. Since that first day, Ryan has led firefighters out to the line each morning, working up to 15 hours a day or more to protect his community and put out the biggest fire he's ever seen burn in Polk County. His familiarity with the landscape and terrain of the Green River Gorge has been a tremendous asset to fire managers as they search for potential firebreaks to halt the spread of the fire. Over the last week, North Carolina has been lucky to have lots of help from around the nation, but the backbone of our wildland fire workforce remains people like Ryan, working hard every day to keep our communities safe from wildfire.

Due to increased fire risk, the N.C. Forest Service has issued a ban on all open burning and has canceled all burning permits statewide effective 8 a.m. Friday, March 21 until further notice.

Under North Carolina law, the ban prohibits all open burning in the affected counties, regardless of whether a permit was previously issued. The issuance of any new permits has also been suspended until the ban is lifted. Anyone violating the burn ban faces a $100 fine plus $183 court costs. Any person responsible for setting a fire may be liable for any expenses related to extinguishing the fire.

The burn ban does not apply to fires started within 100 feet of an occupied dwelling. The local fire marshal has authority to issue a burn ban within that 100 feet.

🚫🔥 INCREASED FIRE DANGER LATE THIS AFTERNOON INTO EARLY EVENING ACROSS PORTIONS OF WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA!

A cold front will allow gusty winds to develop today, ranging from 25 to 35 mph. Although scattered rain showers are expected to track across western North Carolina later this morning, this will not be enough of a wetting rain to bring relief to dry fuels.

Relative humidity will fall below 30% for a few hours later today as drier air filters into the region behind the cold front. Dry fuels, gusty winds, and low relative humidity will all lead to increased Fire Danger today. Thus, a Fire Danger Statement has been issued for the North Carolina Foothills and Piedmont from 4 PM to 8 PM this evening.

Please refer to your local burn permitting authorities
whether you may burn outdoors. If you do burn outside, use extreme caution.

We ask that you postpone any outside burning, we are in an increased fire danger today which means any loose fire could spread quickly due to dry fuels, low humidity and some wind in our areas.
