ARFF, or Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting, is a specialized training program undertaken by select department members on each shift to enhance community service. The department is contracted by the state to provide emergency services for the Airport and surrounding areas in the event of an aircraft emergency.

With spring arriving at last, our Technical Rescue Team dedicated yesterday to practicing a range of swift water rescue techniques. Team members engaged in self-rescue and throwbag rescue exercises, as well as training on how to navigate over water obstacles like trees and storm debris. Our department's Technical Rescue Team, made up of 11 certified members across various rescue disciplines, exemplifies our ongoing efforts to protect the community.

As the weather warms, we want to remind everyone to exercise caution around moving water, ensure a life jacket is on hand when boating, and stay on marked trails during hikes.

A busy afternoon for the fire department, responding to three fires in a short period of time.

At 1345hrs, A-Shift responded to Terrill St for a reported structure fire. Crews arrived on scene and found fire in the wall on the side of the building. The fire was quickly knocked down with only minor damage to the residence. All 4 apartments were able to re-occupy after the incident. The fire was not considered suspicious and there were no injuries. Crews cleared Terrill St around 14:35hrs.

A shift recall was transmitted for station coverage early on, but was then upgraded to a 1st alarm when we were requested mutual aid to Proctor for their wildland fire. A crew of 4 callback personnel responded with our forest fire equipment and the UTV while crews were wrapping up on Terrill St.

At 14:59hrs, the department was dispatched to Terra Ln in Mendon for a reported brush fire. The crew from the structure fire responded with two engines and arrived to a 1/4 acre brush fire, rapidly spreading due to wind conditions. Crews fought the fire from two sides, quickly extinguishing the fire before it became out of control. The cause of the fire was a downed power line due to a broken tree branch. Green Mountain Power was on scene quickly and de-energized the area, allowing crews to safely work the incident. Units were clear of Mendon at 15:50 hrs.

The crew in Proctor cleared the scene around 17:30hrs. Once equipment was clean and re-packed, all recall personnel were released at 1815hrs.

***Structure Fire***

This afternoon at 14:57 hours the department was dispatched to 120 Jackson Ave for a report of smoke coming from the roof of a home.

Ladder 7 And Engine 4, with a total of 8 firefighters, arrived on scene in 4 minutes and encountered a 2.5 story single family dwelling with smoke and fire coming through the ridge cap of the roof and smoke pushing from the attic vents on both ends. The Shift Commander requested a first alarm assignment. Command spoke with the home owner and confirmed everyone had evacuated the home.

A water supply was quickly established due to a hydrant being right across the street from the incident. Engine 4 quickly deployed a hose line and performed an interior attack on the second floor and attic area. Ladder 7's crew performed extensive overhaul, opening up ceilings and walls throughout the second floor.

Heavy fire damage was found in the attic and a second floor closet. The remainder of the home sustained no fire damage, but moderate to heavy smoke and water damage exists throughout.

There were no injuries during this incident and all pets were safely evacuated. The home owners and their pet are temporarily displaced due to the fire. Crews were clear of the scene at 1650 hrs.

Although the Vermont State Police Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit have been contacted for an Origin and Cause determination, the fire is not considered suspicious in nature.

We would like to thank Rutland Town and West Rutland Fire Departments for responding mutual aid to assist. The Rutland City Police Department, Rutland City Department of Public Works, and Rutland City Building Inspectors Office all provided valuable support to us during this incident.
