CHANGES IN SERVICES AND HOURS OF OPERATION FOR THE RUTLAND PUBLIC LIBRARY
Effective July 1, 2026, the Rutland Public Library will be reducing its hours of operation and the services we provide. The Town of Rutland has implemented cuts to address a $2.3M shortfall due to the failure of the tax override. For Fiscal Year ‘27 the Library’s operating budget has been reduced by 21% to $270,235 from last year’s $327,764 (this represents less than 1% of the town’s overall budget).
The necessary changes are as follows:
1. Reduction in staffing requires us to cut hours of operation to 32 hours per week from the current 40 hours. The new schedule effective July 1, 2026 is:
Monday-Closed
Tuesday-10am-6pm
Wednesday-10am-8pm
Thursday-12 noon-8pm
Friday-10am-1pm
Saturday 10am-1pm Labor Day to Memorial Day only
Sunday-Closed
2. The Library expects to lose accreditation from the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners based on the reduction in the town’s budget for the library this year. Accreditation allows our residents to borrow materials from other libraries, use the LIBBY e-book system and makes Rutland’s library eligible for additional funding from the state. We will be submitting a waiver to ask that we maintain accreditation, but if it is not approved, these privileges will be forfeited. The MBLC decision is expected in October of 2026. Without a waiver our patrons will be limited to borrowing only materials in our collection.
3. The Library will no longer be available for events and meetings outside of our hours of operation.
