Due to the significant rainfall Grainger County received today, multiple emergency response agencies spent much of the day evacuating residents from flooded homes and rescuing stranded motorists.

The Rutledge Volunteer Fire Department was first notified at 9:38 a.m. of residents affected by flooding on Mabe Lane. At that time, the Jefferson City Fire Department Swift Water Rescue Team was requested to assist. During the initial response on Mabe Lane, eight individuals were safely rescued and transported to the Grainger Baptist Association shelter.

As flooding continued throughout the day, crews responded to multiple locations across Grainger County, conducting additional evacuations. In total, approximately 30 individuals were safely evacuated from their homes and vehicles by the combined efforts of multiple emergency response agencies.

Rutledge Fire Department responded to the report of a motor vehicle accident on Nance Road. Rutledge Fire Department Utility 1 and Engine 163 responded. A commercial truck had snagged power and utility lines breaking a power pole. The three individuals in the truck were unharmed and safely removed once power was confirmed off.

Rutledge Fire Department responded to a reported single-vehicle accident on Lakeshore Drive.

Engine 163 arrived on scene to find an overturned truck. Firefighters quickly went to work and safely extricated the driver by removing the windshield to gain access to the vehicle.

Fortunately, there were no reported injuries.

We appreciate the efforts of all responders who assisted at the scene and remind motorists to drive safely and stay alert while traveling.

Rutledge and Bean Station Fire Departments conducted acquired structure training last night, giving firefighters hands-on experience in critical skills. Training evolutions included search and rescue, hose line deployment and advancement, firefighter rescue, fire suppression, and scene size-up.

The training was led by Rutledge Fire Department Training Officer Travis Irwin, along with Assistant Chief Dustin Lane.
