Our conservation volunteers have been hard at work pulling Japanese stiltgrass (often called stiltweed) to help protect Rye Nature Center's forest.

Did you know there's a difference between non-native and invasive plants?

A non-native plant simply didn't originate here. An invasive plant is a non-native species that spreads aggressively, outcompetes native plants, and disrupts local ecosystems.

So which is Japanese stiltgrass?

Interested in getting your hands dirty and making a real impact? We'd love to have you join our conservation volunteers. Give us a buzz and help us care for Rye Nature Center!

MACRO MONDAYS! Check out this baby white pine, who’s seed coat is still attached to the pine needles. This seedling was photographed on a Friday, and by Saturday it had been eaten up, most likely by a deer.

Time for another edition of MACRO MONDAYS!

Take a look at this giant silk moth. Her cocoon had been under observation since early September, and she finally emerged this spring.

As an adult, she’ll live for only about five days. Nearly her entire life was spent growing and developing inside that cocoon, making this brief adult stage the final chapter of a much longer story. It’s a great reminder of just how incredible insect life cycles can be.
