New monofilament recycling tube alert! We recently installed a new monofilament tube on our West Beach entrance. If you are walking on the beach or fishing on the surf and you find/use a fishing line 🎣 on the beach, this is the place to recycle it! But why is this important?
Monofilament, or “mono” for short, is a single strand of material that is made of a strong, flexible plastic that is clear or tinted many colors. It is one of the most popular types of fishing line used today.

If you’ve gone fishing, you know that this type of line gets tangled very quickly. It gets caught on rocks, coral reefs, oil rigs, anything solid! They also get wrapped around the limbs of animals, especially sea turtles, dolphins, sharks🦈, 🐟 , and many more. When wrapped around the limbs, it only starts to cut the limb.

Help us keep our marine wildlife safe! 🐬🐢

It’s a turtletasic day today because it’s Sea Rim is home to many different types, both in the gulf and in the marsh! From our Red Eared sliders and Eastern Mud turtles to our Atlantic Green and Kemp’s Ridley sea turtles, many call the park home.

While we don’t have a nesting population of sea turtles, we still see them pop up once in a while. Sea turtles are one of many species that are affected by plastic pollution. If you find a sea turtle on our beaches, there are some things you can do to help!

🐢Call your local Sea Turtle Rescue! For us here in Southeast Texas, it is the wonderful Texas Sea Turtle Stranding and Salvage Network. Their number is (866) TURTLE5 or (866-887-8535)

🗑️Pick up trash! Millions of pounds of trash end up in our oceans each year, and sea turtles can’t distinguish between trash and food, so they ingest trash every day. This trash can cause poisoning, internal and external injury, and many more issues. So pick up your trash not only on the beach but at home too!

🎣Dispose of your fishing line properly. Monofilament and Braided fishing lines cause issues for turtles when it wraps around their fins, shells, or necks. Find a monofilament recycling tube near where you are fishing, or take it home and recycle it properly!
