Visit Sackets Harbor

Visit Sackets Harbor This page provides updates and information for visitors to our community. The Sackets Harbor Visitor Center is the perfect place to begin a visit to Sackets.

Overlooking beautiful Lake Ontario, Sackets Harbor offers year round activities for the whole family. Sheltered on Black River Bay, the village is one of New York State’s Heritage Areas with exceptional historic attractions and beautifully tree-lined streets. The entire village provides an opportunity to discover unique history, charming architecture, and a variety of events and activities. Locate

d in village founder Augustus Sacket's historic home, the Visitor Center offers exhibits highlighting local history and the story of the village. In addition, we offer tourism information for attractions, businesses, and events in Sackets, as well as those in the 1000 Island and North Country regions.

Work on the Visitor Center porch is progressing! Our old deck has been completely removed and replaced, along with the (historically inaccurate) lattice skirting around the base of the porch. We're excited to debut the completed porch in the very near future!

Did you know...
On June 11, 1970, Elizabeth P. Hoisington and Anna Mae Hays became the first women promoted to general in the United States military.
An "Army brat," Hoisington spent six years at Madison Barracks, where her father commanded a battalion. She attended school in the village and joined the newly formed Girl Scouts there.
After college, Hoisington enlisted in the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps during World War II, when the military was still segregated by gender. Over the next three decades, her assignments would take her to Germany, Japan, Vietnam, and France. Under her leadership, the corps expanded, and women moved into new roles in intelligence, technical, and mechanical MOS's.
But her promotion also marked another record: she and her brother Perry became the first - and so far the only - sister and brother to both serve as generals in the United States military.

The Visitor Center porch repairs got underway today! The front pillars are coming down, and you can see why it's necessary, if you scroll through the photos and check out the pillars that have been removed so far. We're looking forward to having a nicer looking, safer, and sturdier front porch very soon!
