Happy Fourth! Today we celebrate our nation’s independence and the enduring promise of freedom and democracy. As we gather today – at parades and barbeques – let’s reflect on the values that unite us and continue striving for a better future.

This morning, I joined Governor Janet Mills and Democratic legislators in S**o for the groundbreaking of Sweetser’s new youth psychiatric residential treatment facility.

For too long, Maine children with behavioral health needs have faced long waitlists, stays in emergency rooms, or have been forced to leave the state to receive care.

With funding from the Legislature, this center will provide 24/7 intensive treatment for Mainers under 21, helping more families access the care they need closer to home.

It's Wild Turtle Week! Will you take the turtle pledge?

🐢 Keep wild turtles wild. Never take a turtle home from the wild.
🐢 If it's safe to do so, help turtles cross the road. Always move them in the direction they were going without relocating them to a new area. They know where they want to go!
🐢 Never release a pet turtle in the wild. This could negatively impact native species.
🐢 Learn about turtles and contribute observations to the Maine Amphibian and Reptile Atlas Project: mefishwildlife.com/atlas
🐢 Protect turtle habitat by cleaning up trash and leaving no trace.
🐢 Share this post to encourage others to take the pledge.

BSOOB Transit will begin construction soon on an exciting project that will add state-of-the-art overhead pantographic bus charging infrastructure to the S**o Transportation Center at 138 Main Street.

The charging infrastructure and two additional electric buses are funded by $3.6 million in federal grants and will replace some of the oldest buses in BSOOB’s fleet. Electric buses cost significantly less per mile to operate, and the new chargers will increase the range of those vehicles so they can complete an 18-hour service day.

There will be impacts to parking and operations at the S**o Transportation Center during construction, which is scheduled to take place from June 8, 2026, through August 2026. The station building and train platforms will continue to be fully operational throughout construction, bike racks will remain in place, and safe pedestrian access will be maintained. Vehicle traffic along Gooch Street will continue to flow and there will be no impact to Main Street traffic from this project.

Learn more about the temporary changes to short-term parking and bus pick-up locations on BSOOB’s website: bsoobtransit.org/saco-transportation-center-construction-starts-june-8th

Community members with questions or concerns may reach out to BSOOB Transit at (207) 282-5408.

This construction schedule is subject to change, and we’ll communicate any significant updates through our City newsletter. Sign up for our twice-a-month newsletter on our website at sacomaine.org/newsletter.

On this day, President John F. Kennedy signed the Equal Pay Act into law, prohibiting employers from paying men and women different wages for equal work.

Unfortunately, women in Maine still have to work 14.5 months to earn what a man earns in a year.

This session, I passed a bill, LD 522, that will direct the Permanent Commission on the Status of Women to collect data and provide recommendations to help ensure that all Maine women have fair access to economic opportunities.

He needed to make 10,704 shots to break the record. He made 11,115 hoops.

Last week, I went down to Camp Ellis to check out the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ work on the jetty and ran into some friends – Dan Chadbourne, former harbormaster, and David Pendleton, current S**o harbormaster.

Up in Augusta, I remain committed to investing in coastal resilience and protecting our local shoreline for generations to come.
