On behalf of everyone at the City of S**o and the S**o Police Department, we send our sincere condolences to Warden Tibbetts' entire family, and to the Maine Warden Service.

Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife is heartbroken to share that Game Warden Pilot Joshua Tibbetts died this morning in a plane crash in Avon, ME.

Game Warden Pilot Tibbetts served the people of Maine as a Maine Game Warden for 18 years, including the last three years as a pilot for Maine Warden Service. In that role, his specialized aviation work supported search and rescue, law enforcement, fisheries and wildlife conservation, and public safety across the state.

This is an incredibly difficult loss for his family, friends, colleagues, and the entire Maine Warden Service. We ask the public to keep his loved ones, his fellow Game Wardens, and all those affected by this tragedy in their thoughts in the days ahead.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing. The Department will cooperate fully with the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board.

We are grateful for the emergency personnel who responded to the scene and for the support already being shown to the Maine Warden Service family.

Thank you to our officers and staff for their continued dedication to the S**o community. This National Police Week, ple...

Beyond emergency response, S**o PD builds lasting relationships with residents through programs like National Night Out and Socks for Seniors. Save the date for this summer’s National Night out, set for Aug. 4 at Thornton Academy!

Please join us in thanking S**o’s patrol officers, sergeants, lieutenants, non-sworn civilian staff, dispatchers, support personnel, and administration for their continued service to the community!

At 6:51 a.m. on May 1, 2026, the S**o Emergency Communications Center received 9-1-1 calls reporting a motor vehicle crash in the area of 838 Portland Road in the City of S**o. The crash involved a motorcycle and a car.

S**o Police Department and S**o Fire Department responded promptly to the scene. Preliminary investigations and evidence gathered at the scene indicate that a gray Harley Davidson motorcycle was traveling northbound on the Portland Road and attempted to pass a tractor trailer truck making a right turn into a business when the motorcycle crossed the double yellow center lines into the path of a southbound red Chevy Equinox, leading to a tragic head-on collision.

The driver of the motorcycle was transported to Maine Medical Center (Portland) where they were pronounced deceased. The deceased is Michael Petersen, age 52, of Biddeford. Petersen’s family has been directly notified.

The operator of the Chevy Equinox was identified as Mickie Cyr, age 53, of S**o. Cyr was transported to Maine Medical Center (Portland) with no life-threatening injuries.

The units continue to work together to reconstruct the crash and ascertain the precise sequence of events while this crash remains under investigation.

Animal Control Officers fulfill a unique role, dedicating themselves to the protection of animals and the public alike. This Animal Control Officer (ACO) Appreciation Week, we’re taking the opportunity to thank S**o ACO Kaden Flynn, who started with the City in 2018.

Kaden’s compassion and thoughtfulness shines through in their work. In 2025, they were awarded S**o PD’s Civilian Employee of the Year Award for their commitment to the safety of domestic animals and wildlife and a Meritorious Service Award for their work saving and treating two newborn kittens who were found abandoned in a dumpster.

ACO Flynn’s constant efforts ensure that lost dogs, cats, and other pets are safely returned to their families, that wildlife in crisis are rescued and cared for, that dog licenses are properly managed, and that seasonal piping plover nesting sites are closely monitored.

Please join us in thanking ACO Flynn for their continued compassion and commitment to keeping S**o’s animals safe!

The S**o Police Department is recognizing a second bittersweet retirement to end this week. Today we honor Steve Kierstead, whose steady presence and deep knowledge have supported the agency for many years.

Steve’s journey through the department has included roles in Emergency Communications and the Records Division, ultimately as Court Officer, with each role building on the skill and professionalism he brought from the moment he joined in 2006. He transitioned to Records in 2014 and stepped into the Court Officer position in 2020.

Throughout his career, Steve managed complex and detailed work that is often unseen by the public but is essential to the department’s operations. From uniform crime reporting and data verification to navigating the move from paper to digital systems, e-citation, and body worn camera video, he consistently adapted as technology evolved.

In his role as Court Officer, Steve became the dependable link between S**o PD, the courts, and the District Attorney’s Office. His balanced approach and professionalism earned strong trust across agencies.

“Steve builds a bond with each person he meets, whether you’re new or seasoned or an agency partner,” said Deputy Police Chief Corey Huntress. “And he’s always there to lend an ear to anybody about anything.”

Colleagues say Steve’s positive attitude and willingness to support others have been defining parts of his time at S**o PD. Often seen as a father figure within the department, he has been someone people could turn to on difficult days.

As he looks ahead to spending more time with his family, including his grandkids, and cheering on the Red Sox, the City of S**o extends its sincere appreciation for his many years of service.

Please join us in wishing Steve the very best in his retirement!
