This recognition highlights the real-world impact of traffic safety: lives protected, crashes prevented, and impaired drivers successfully kept off South Sacramento roads.

On Thursday July 23, 2026, IDS wrapped up our 8th Drug Recognition Expert School of 2026! It was highly successful! We had 24 law enforcement officers begin the class and all 24 passed the final test, which is not an easy task. We also had 4 auditors from the crime labs of CA Department of Justice and Sacramento County (auditors don't take the final test and don't certify as DREs). The law enforcement attendees were 15 CHP Officers from many different offices, as well as officers from San Rafael PD, Delano PD, Sacramento PD, Redding PD, Colusa PD, Elk Grove PD and Rancho Cordova PD (Sac Sheriff).

The course was managed by IDS Officer Pierman with instructor assistance from many other members of IDS, CHP - Santa Rosa, CHP - Auburn, San Francisco Police Department, Pittsburg Police Department, Pittsburg, CA and California TSRP- Orange County DA.

This course was funded by a grant from California Office of Traffic Safety and with support from International Association of Chiefs of Police.

Once again, vigilant members of the public called 911 to report a suspected drunk driver who was putting lives at risk. Thanks to the teamwork between our community and CHP officers, we quickly located the heavily intoxicated driver, who failed a DUI evaluation and was arrested on suspicion of DUI.🥴

CHP AWARDS MORE THAN $41 MILLION TO COMBAT IMPAIRED DRIVING ACROSS CALIFORNIA

Funding supports enforcement, education and forensic testing statewide

SACRAMENTO— The California Highway Patrol (CHP) today announced more than $41 million in grant funding for 183 California law enforcement agencies, crime laboratories, local government agencies and nonprofit organizations to strengthen efforts to prevent and reduce impaired driving.

Funding comes through the voter-approved Proposition 64, which directs the CHP to administer grants for impaired driving education, prevention, and enforcement programs. The grants also fund forensic toxicology testing at crime laboratories. Program revenue comes from taxes on cannabis and cannabis products sold in California.

“The substantial increase in grant funding this year will help even more communities keep California’s roadways safe. These grants support education, strengthen enforcement efforts to remove impaired drivers from our roads, and expand research and forensic testing to improve traffic safety across the state.”

Strengthening Local Enforcement

The CHP awarded grants to 160 law enforcement agencies to support impaired-driving enforcement across California. In addition to enforcement operations, agencies will use the funding to train drug recognition evaluators, expand their ability to identify drug-impaired drivers, and conduct public education campaigns through community events and presentations.

Expanding Public Education

Twelve agencies received education grants to raise public awareness of impaired driving laws and to educate Californians about the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Improving Forensic Testing

Ten agencies received two-year toxicology crime laboratory grants to reduce forensic testing backlogs, improve laboratory capacity, and purchase or upgrade testing equipment.

Advancing DUI Data Collection

One medical examiner’s office received a two-year grant to improve data collection for impaired-driving cases.

This week, IDS officers had the pleasure of instructing CHP Explorer cadets during their week long "Level 4" Explorer academy being held at the CHP - Academy. Here you can see them going through DUI stop scenarios.
Looking forward to seeing these amazing young people come through as CHP cadets in the near future!

Yesterday, IDS officers were out at CHP - Academy with cadet class CTC I-26 showing them how to conduct a DUI stop. This is an early demonstration for the cadets to better understand the blocks of classroom instruction they have been receiving in DUI and report writing. They will eventually have to demonstrate the skills they have learned in their own DUI stop scenarios and alcohol workshops before graduating and doing it for real!

On June 10, 2026, CHP IDS was pleased to attend the California Office of Traffic Safety Law Enforcement Forum to present awards for exceptional performance to the top 10 Drug Recognition Experts in the state and four special recognition awards for outstanding contribution to the DRE program. IDS Sergeant Smith read the names and bios of each awardee and the awards were presented by Enforcement and Planning Division Assistant Chief Depee.
