For those who've spent their lives stably housed, later-life homelessness is typically triggered by a traumatic event — the death of a spouse, divorce, job loss, eviction, or the onset of health issues. Older adults are also more likely to spend over half their income on housing and live on a fixed income, making them unable to keep up as costs spike (US Interagency Council on Homelessness).

Thursday, June 11, community members, advocates, and stakeholders are invited to join us at the California Endowment for an informational hearing on permanent supportive housing for older adults. RSVP: https://ccoa.ca.gov/

On average, a 65-year-old can expect to spend about $135,000 on long-term care during their lifetime, according to the Milliman Long-Term Care Index.” Most older adults don’t understand that Medicare does not cover long-term care and Medicaid requires you to spend down all your assets to qualify.

On July 1, after a successful four-month pilot, the WA Cares Fund will begin paying up to $36,500 in lifetime benefits to help qualified Washington residents cover the high cost of long-term care.

The CA state May Budget Revision proposes a $2,000 asset limit that would require adults over 65 and those with disabilities to impoverish themselves to qualify for Medi-Cal health care services.

The Assembly has accepted the Governor’s proposed $2,000 asset limit with a delayed implementation. Asset limits include savings, cash, second vehicles, and other financial resources. The administration estimates this proposal would result in about 62,000 people losing coverage within the first two years.
