This Juneteenth, we celebrate the achievements, resilience, and bright futures of African American professionals.

Congratulations to Daionne on an Electrician Apprenticeship with the City of Richmond, CA - Local Government Public Works Department! 👏⚡

Daionne began her journey through RichmondBUILD’s Multi-Craft Core Curriculum pre-apprenticeship program, earning multiple industry-recognized certifications in the skilled trades. She then advanced her training through the Richmond Wired for Success project, funded by CWDB’s Accelerator 13 program.

The Wired for Success program emphasizes renewable energy technologies and prepares graduates with the essential skills needed to enter electrician apprenticeships while contributing to a more sustainable economy.

Daionne’s success story reflects the power of workforce development partnerships. We are proud to celebrate her accomplishments and look forward to all she will achieve in the future.

This Juneteenth, we are proud to highlight our partner, the April Parker Foundation, for their work empowering veterans of color in Long Beach through workforce development and public-sector career training.

Their Public Sector Certificate Training Program for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) Veterans helps address the shortage of qualified candidates in public-sector jobs while creating pathways to stable careers with the City of Long Beach.

Funded by Accelerator 13, this project serves Long Beach-residing BIPOC veterans, particularly those facing barriers such as homelessness, substance use, disabilities, and poverty. Participants build job-readiness and technical skills, earning certifications that prepare them for quality public-sector employment.

Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) are at the heart of healthcare in California! đź’™

With more than 100,000 CNAs employed statewide—the highest number in the nation*—these dedicated professionals provide essential care and support to patients and families every day.

After completing the IHSS Professionalization Program, participants may qualify for additional training opportunities, including the CNA training course. This course prepares students for CNA certification and can lead to higher wages, expanded job opportunities, and a pathway to continued education and career advancement.

Highlights from the Center For Caregiver Advancement project:
• 239 students received CNA Certification
• 204 students secured employment in a CNA role

Through CWDB’s High Road Training Partnerships Healthcare Grant, we proudly support the Center for Caregiver Advancement (CCA). Its Pathways to Professionalization for In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS) Workers program transitions participants to train to become CNAs.

Thank you CCA for being a High Road Training Partnership grantee!

In-demand behavioral health careers start with strong workforce pathways.đź’š

The California Labor and Workforce Development Agency’s latest blog highlights California’s efforts to strengthen behavioral health career pathways and expand access to care across rural communities.

As healthcare continues to drive resilience and economic growth, CWDB is partnering with regional leaders to expand local training capacity, strengthen career pathways, and align workforce programs with employer needs.

Through apprenticeships, earn-and-learn models, and community-based training, Californians can gain in-demand behavioral health skills while earning an income and building careers that support community well-being.

California is projected to have a 40% shortage of mental health workers this year.

Our partner, Multi-Ethnic Collaborative of Community Agencies, has teamed up with nine agencies across Orange County to expand training and career pathways in behavioral health. Their Planning and Development for Expanded Multi-Ethnic Behavioral Health Workforce project is opening doors for individuals to gain the skills they need for meaningful, well-paying careers—while helping communities access critical services.

The program focuses on four in-demand roles:
• Community Health Workers
• Certified Wellness Coaches
• Peer Support Specialists
• Substance Use Disorder Counselors

Thank you to MECCA and all of their partners for investing in people, communities, and a healthier California!

During Mental Health Month, we’re recognizing the Worker Education and Resource Center as it wraps up its High Road Training Partnership grant in Los Angeles and Alameda counties.

THIS IS REAL IMPACT.

Training community health workers. Expanding harm reduction specialist pathways. Meeting people where they are.

These workers are on the front lines in our most vulnerable communities – reducing harm, connecting people to care, and strengthening public health and safety every day.

They are also helping fill California’s behavioral health workforce shortage. And they are doing it by opening doors for people with barriers to employment to step into stable, meaningful careers.

This is what building a stronger California looks like.
