New national polling reveals a shift worth paying attention to: openness to a strong independent candidate is now nearly identical across party lines.

In the latest wave of Independent Center Voice’s national tracking survey, Republican openness jumped 7.6 points — from 62.7% to 70.3% — the largest single move anywhere in the data. That shift closes a gap that, just six weeks earlier, had Republicans trailing Independents and Democrats by 9 to 16 points.

The result: for the first time in this tracking, all three groups are within roughly 6 points of each other —

🔹 Independents: 75.9%
🔹 Democrats: 72.4%
🔹 Republicans: 70.3%

What hasn’t moved yet is action: only 6.3% of respondents currently say they’d choose an independent candidate on their district’s ballot today, even with ~70% overall openness to the idea. Awareness — not appetite — remains the biggest barrier.

This data comes from a survey of 1,000 U.S. adults conducted July 13–14, 2026, with a margin of error of ±3.1 percentage points.

87% of congressional races were effectively decided before a single general election vote was cast. Only 7% of eligible voters showed up to decide them.

That’s not democracy working as intended — that’s a system engineered by both parties to reward the most extreme voices in the room.

In a new piece for , Independent Center Senior Advisor Adam Brandon breaks down how closed primaries, gerrymandered maps, and restrictive ballot access laws are producing a governing class that looks nothing like the country it represents — and why 45% of Americans now identify as independent because of it.

The founders warned us about parties. The voters are finally listening.

📰 We made Newsweek.

A new analysis found 217 independent candidates are running for Congress in 2026 — up about 80 from 2024. Newsweek cited our own research on Colorado, where unaffiliated voters now outnumber registered Democrats AND Republicans combined.

This isn’t a fluke. It’s a trend line.

45% of Americans now identify as independent. Voters aren’t just frustrated — they’re acting on it, from the ballot box to who’s willing to run.

Most voters aren’t asking for more partisanship. They’re asking for problem-solvers.

The data is clear according to Independent Center Voice polling: there’s real appetite for independent candidates who can bring people together instead of pulling them apart.

The question isn’t whether voters want this. It’s whether the system makes room for it.
