We have been a bit MIA but still lurking in the mountains every chance we get. Last weekend we decided to bag an oldie but goodie in Desolation Wilderness, Mount Tallac. The Mount Tallac Trail is a strenuous 10.5 to-11-mile round-trip hike in South Lake Tahoe, California, featuring a 3,300-foot elevation gain and topping out at a 9,738-foot summit. The views are worth the work, rewarding one with what we dare say is the best view in the Tahoe Basin offing panoramic views of Lake Tahoe, Emerald Bay, and Desolation Wilderness.This hike does require a free self-registration permit at the trailhead. A little behind but trying to find some of the best urban hikes in the USA under 6 miles. This week I explored Crowders Mountain just outside Charlotte, North Carolina metro. It was a delightful 5.5 miles with ~9,000 ' of gain. Crowders Mountain state park offers a variety of hiking trails with stunning views of Charlotte and beyond from the summit, and opportunities for sport and trad climbing. They highlight the well-maintained trails, the challenging hikes, and the peaceful, natural atmosphere. They also like the clean facilities and the helpful staff. 10/10 recommend if you happen to be in the area.

Been lazy on the trail sharing but hit an area lesser traveled for us. Explored Folsom Lake State Park near the marina this past weekend and found it was accessible, offers beautiful views of Folsom Lake with access to the water and picnic tables overlooking the lake. They highlights are miles of connecting trails as far as the heart desires, dog friendly with a relaxing atmosphere, perfect for a picnic, and the opportunity to get fresh air and exercise close to the urban jungle. Also heard rumors of you time it right there are nice sunsets by the lake.

This may be an unpopular opinion but hear us out.... We are down for the summit beer but after one hits a certain milestone, the beer may stop agreeing with one's constitution and the summit WINE starts to hit. We are training for HST and decided a 4,100' hike in 3.5 miles needed the training weight of glass so an red blend of Coco was the flex of the day and it indeed HIT. We had such a great Sunday in Hope Valley with & . A fantastic group came for snowshoeing in the valley and Aprè snacks and cocktails at the Hope Valley Bar & Grill hosted by Terrex. We cannot wait to spend future afternoons at our new favorite post hike hang in Alpine and if you forgot the snowshoes or cross-country skis… no worries they rent em 😉.

Hope Valley Meet Up

Howdy everyone, we are doing one of our yearly meet up with Adidas TERREX at one of our favorite winter spots, Hope Valley December 15th.

Desolation Hotel is hosting which is a local business that took ownership Wylder Hotel (formerly Sorensons) in Hope Valley last year. It’s a great meet up spot and depending on conditions we are gonna hike, snowshoe or if ya have ski’s skin up the Hope Valley Overlook (formerly Indian Head Cliff) +/- 5 miles then meet at Desolation Hotel for Apres Drinks from TERREX.

Adidas TERREX will also be demoing their ColdRdy hiking shoes if you wanna try em out. I have traditions to thier free hikers in the last few years and kinda obsessed. The area has lots of camping, and BLM pull outs very close for primitive camping or book Desolation Hotel if ya wanna glam and get out there early. Hope Valley and Alpine County has become one of our favorite areas to explore.

There is a radio tower looming >10,000’ in Alpine county that can be seen from Desolation Wilderness to the North and Sonora Peak to the South but we have never been there 🫣. So, today was the day to hike a dusty exposed fire road to see what we could see. We day hiked up Hawkins Peak via Burnside Lake road to the looming radio tower and it was just lovely. There are multiple routes, but we opted to for a trailhead ~ 4 miles up Burnside Lake Road. High clearance recommended but not critical, AWD ideal and the Subaru got the job done with no issues. Started in a pull out and headed up a fire road that lands on a ridge-line South of the summit. Be sure to stop on the ridge and enjoy the Alpine views of Mokelumne Wilderness to the West and Nevada high desert to the East then make your way up a use trail skirting North on the ridge. Once near the summit a class 2 adventure is apparent with a “trail” cutting to the radio tower. Summit and enjoy the 360 degree views of Alpine County. While one may be annoyed by the tower sitting on this ancient volcanic plug, it’s a damn fine wind break and a much needed respite from the 45 + gusts. All and all a lovely day to a peak we have looked upon for years. Finished the hike cooling off at Burnside Lake for a 10/10 kinda day. Have fun out there and don’t forget to, take a hike.

Another summer tradition in the books. We float, then make our way to the iconic dome. Our adventures have taken us from just about every trailhead you could access her from but this year we got our favorite permits, Glacier Point to Little Yosemite Valley for an alpine start up the cables. This route is 8 miles to camp and while longer, has less elevation gain cutting some of the +/- 2,000’ from Yosemite Valley. This route also avoids much of the crowds along Mist and JMT from Happy Isles trailhead. Little Yosemite Valley is a great camp complete with a WC, bear boxes and plenty of sites away from others if desired with water access at the Merced. The other benefit is the valley is only 3 miles from Half Dome. Many leave the valley around midnight to make the summit for sunrise but the location of camp makes for a more relaxed summit push and a much lighter bag 😉. We even managed a 4 mile side hike after making camp to see what we could see up the Merced River canyon make for +/- 24 mile 2 day adventure 😆. We have often said, “don’t think we need to do this again” but something about Half Dome keeps us coming back for more year after year. The summer pilgrimage to Half Dome is sure to stay. An interesting note, each year we notice more people using safety (including us) and 2024 was no exception. This trip by far had more sitting harnesses (via ferrata) set ups, than any of the past 15 trips to sub dome and we’re here for it.
