Thank you to the Sacramento Police Department for their swift work in identifying and arresting the individual suspected of causing yesterday’s fatal hit-and-run that took the life of a young girl.

While no arrest can undo this heartbreaking loss, I hope it brings some measure of comfort to her family and loved ones to know that the person responsible has been found and will face accountability. My thoughts remain with everyone grieving this unimaginable tragedy.

UPDATE: Thanks to the dedicated work of our Major Collision Investigators, the Sacramento Police Department is proud to announce the identification and arrest of the suspect in this case.

This arrest, made less than 24 hours after the incident, is the result of the coordinated efforts of responding officers, crime scene investigators who processed the scene, and detectives who worked tirelessly, including an approximately four-hour neighborhood canvass.

As a result of this work, 30-year-old Miracle Merritt of Sacramento was located and arrested on felony hit-and-run and misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter charges.

-------

On Thursday, June 11, 2026, just before 8:00 p.m., Sacramento Police Department patrol officers responded to reports of a vehicle vs. mini-motorcycle collision near 36th Street and 19th Avenue. Responding officers located an adult male and a 9-year-old female, both having injuries consistent with being involved in a collision. Both were transported to an area hospital for treatment. Sadly, the 9-year-old female was pronounced deceased at the hospital. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene after the collision and prior to police arrival.

Due to the circumstances, our Major Collision Investigation Unit (MCIU) detectives and Crime Scene Investigators (CSI) responded to take over the investigation. They processed the scene, canvassed the area, and interviewed witnesses. The circumstances of the incident remain under investigation.

The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will release the identity of the deceased after next-of-kin have been notified.

The Sacramento Police Department encourages any witnesses with information regarding this investigation to contact the dispatch center at (916) 808-5471 or Sacramento Valley Crime Stoppers at (916) 443-HELP (4357). Callers can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000. Anonymous tips can also be submitted using the free “P3 Tips” smartphone app.

I heard from you about how much our pools, community centers, and senior and youth programming matter. Closing the $66 million deficit required difficult decisions but these free City services add so much value to our neighborhoods and I am relieved we can maintain these lifelines for so many Sacramentans.

Sacramento needs more housing. That's why my Council colleagues and I unanimously passed the Missing Middle Housing Interim Ordinance, which allows multi-unit housing in traditionally single-family zones, making it possible to build duplexes, fourplexes, and other small multifamily developments in every neighborhood. This recent proposal for a 38-unit housing project is proof that policies like the MMH Interim Ordinance works.

Last night, I had the opportunity to attend the Jakara Movement Gala and was incredibly honored to receive the Civic Participation Recognition for our work to change Sacramento’s policy and allow Sikhs to carry kirpans in accordance with their faith.

One of the things I love most about public service is working alongside community members to remove barriers that shouldn’t exist in the first place. This was a commonsense change that affirmed religious freedom and made our city a little more welcoming and inclusive.

I’m especially grateful to Jasjit Singh and Mandeep Singh, whose advocacy, persistence, and partnership helped make this happen.

Thank you to Jakara Movement for the honor and for all you do to develop leaders, build civic engagement, and strengthen communities across California.

Toured the Pacific Health Care Collaborative (PHCC) in Oak Park today and was incredibly impressed. This 30,000-square-foot facility is expanding access to health care while also training the next generation of doctors, dentists, pharmacists, and other health professionals.

I was especially excited to learn about their upcoming mobile dental clinic, which will bring oral health services directly to neighborhoods throughout Oak Park and beyond.

Thank you to the PHCC team for the tour and for their commitment to serving Oak Park residents and strengthening community health!
