This is your reminder that somewhere out there is a person whose favorite breed is German Shepherds... and they have absolutely no idea Roxy exists yet.

Meanwhile, Roxy showed up to her DOGust birthday party looking like she personally hired a glam squad. The ears? Perfect. The smile? Immaculate. The "I'd like to speak to the manager of whoever hasn't adopted me yet" expression? Academy Award-worthy.

At just 2 years old, Roxy is the perfect age. She's past the tiny-puppy chaos but still has all the energy and enthusiasm for adventures, hikes, training, and being your ride-or-die sidekick. She's already participated in shelter playgroups and may enjoy a compatible canine friend in her new home, so if your dog has been asking for a best friend, bring them by for a meet and greet.

🎉 It's DOGust, which means ALL dog adoption fees are WAIVED through August 23! If you've been waiting for a sign to adopt, this is it. Roxy is waiting, her birthday bandana is on, and she's more than ready to trade shelter life for a couch, a family, and approximately 47 tennis balls.

Come meet Roxy (A924828) at Bradshaw Animal Shelter. We have a feeling she won't be waiting long. 🩷

You know that one friend who hides behind you when meeting new people... and then ends up being the sweetest person in the room?

That's Schatzie.

At just 7 months old, he's still figuring out that the world isn't such a scary place. He came to the shelter with two of his siblings, and while they're all a little shy, they're already making incredible progress. We recently introduced them to some of our calm, confident mentor dogs, and it's been amazing to watch them start learning that life can be pretty great.

Schatzie doesn't need someone looking for the "perfect" dog.

He needs someone who understands that the best relationships take a little time. The kind of person who celebrates the first tail wag, the first kiss, and the first moment he realizes, "I think I'm home."

🎉 The best part? It's DOGust! From August 1–23, all dog adoption fees are WAIVED because every shelter dog deserves the greatest birthday gift of all—a family.

So if you've been waiting for a sign...

Maybe it's the shy little puppy who's just waiting for someone to believe in him.

I'm starting to take this personally.

Freddie has watched dog after dog pack up their things and head home. He's celebrated their happy endings. He's wagged his tail for every new person who's walked through our doors. And somehow...

He's still waiting.

This handsome silver fox has been at Bradshaw Animal Shelter since April 20—making him our longest-term resident. The crazy part? He recently spent the night with one of our volunteers and absolutely crushed it. He rode perfectly in the car, had zero potty accidents, tolerated a bath like a gentleman, charmed everyone he met, and reminded us that the shelter is only one tiny chapter of his story.

He already knows sit and shake (with both paws, because he's an overachiever), walks beautifully on leash, is incredibly treat motivated, and would happily spend his days enjoying relaxed strolls followed by an afternoon nap by your side. He's also started sharing a room with a female dog and is doing well, so if you have a dog looking for a friend, bring them by for a meet and greet. (A cat-free home is recommended.)

🎉 It's DOGust! The best birthday gift we could give our shelter dogs is a family of their own, which is why all dog adoption fees are WAIVED through August 23.

Let's make sure Freddie doesn't become the dog everyone remembers as "the one who waited the longest."

Let's make him the one who finally went home.

DOGust has officially begun... which means every shelter dog has one birthday wish. 🎂🐾

Spoiler alert:

It's not another squeaky toy.

It's not another treat.

It's not even another pupcake.

It's you.

Meet Lauren, an 11-month-old Husky mix who's equal parts sass, sweetness, and tiny little menace. When she first arrived at the shelter, she wasn't sure what to think of the world. Now? She's ready to make up for lost time. She loves stretching her legs around the yard, has made huge progress with her leash manners, enjoys hanging out with other dogs in playgroup, and has mastered the classic Husky move of pretending she doesn't want affection... right before surprising you with a big kiss on the mouth.

Think of her as a 50-pound cat in a Husky suit. Independent? Absolutely. Silly? Constantly. Worth it? One hundred percent.

🎉 To celebrate DOGust—the universal birthday for shelter dogs—we're waiving adoption fees for ALL DOGS from August 1–23!

There has never been a better time to meet your new adventure buddy, couch companion, hiking partner, or professional household comedian.

Lauren doesn't know it's her birthday.

She just knows she's still waiting.

Let's change that.

We're incredibly proud to celebrate Deputy Boyd, Deputy Thomas, and Animal Control Officer K. Aragon, who were nominated by their peers and selected for this recognition.

Every day, these team members help create an environment where every person, every animal, and every interaction is met with compassion, respect, and inclusion. Their dedication to serving our community makes Bradshaw Animal Shelter a better place for both people and pets.

Please join us in congratulating them on this well-deserved honor! 💙👏

Hudson is the kind of friend who says, "Let's go on an adventure!"... and then immediately gets distracted by something shiny.

Throw him a tennis ball? Amazing. Best day ever.

Will he bring it back?

Respectfully... probably not.

Because somewhere between "I got the ball!" and "I'm bringing it back!" he remembered there's a fascinating smell three feet away that absolutely requires his immediate attention.

Classic Hudson.

He's 3 years old, around 76 pounds, and approaches every day like it's full of new discoveries. He starts his walks with a little extra enthusiasm, but after he gets a chance to stretch his legs, he settles into an easygoing walking buddy who's just happy to be out exploring the world. He loves people, happily checks in for pets before heading off on his next investigation, and has done well in our shelter playgroups. If you already have a dog, bring them by for a meet and greet!

Hudson even knows a hand signal for "sit" (he actually pays better attention to that than the word), and while treats occasionally cause him to forget his manners for a second... honestly? Same.

🎉 DOGust is here! From August 1–23, all dog adoption fees are waived at Bradshaw Animal Shelter. Come meet Hudson and see why life is just a little more fun when you're living it through his eyes. 🐾💙

🎉 Happy Dogust! 🎉

Every August 1, we celebrate the "birthday" of shelter dogs whose exact birthdays are unknown—and this year, we made sure the party included pupcakes! 🧁🐾 A huge thank you to Dave for baking these special treats and helping make the day extra sweet for our four-legged birthday crew.

If there were an award for Most Likely to Make Everyone at the Party Smile, Nala would win by a landslide.

She's the kind of dog who doesn't just walk into a room—she arrives. Her tail never stops wagging, she hands out kisses like it's her full-time job, and she somehow manages to make every person she meets feel like they've been friends forever. Toys? Love them. Treats? Absolutely. Brain games? Sign her up. Long walks in the summer heat? She'd politely decline and vote for air conditioning instead. (A perk of being a lovable smoosh-faced girl!)

Nala has been waiting since May 31, and we'd love nothing more than for this to be the birthday she celebrates in a home of her own. ❤️

Even better? August 1 kicks off our Clear the Shelters event, and adoption fees are FREE for all available dogs!

🎂 Happy Dogust, Nala. Here's hoping your biggest birthday wish—and the wishes of so many shelter pets—come true.

📍 Visit Bradshaw Animal Shelter Tuesday–Sunday (Noon–5 p.m., Wednesdays until 6 p.m.) to take advantage of FREE adoptions and meet Nala (A920744), or learn more about her here: https://24petconnect.com/SacramentoCountyAdoptablePets/Details/SACC/A920744.

🐾 Help us clear the shelters—share this post, stop by, and help a shelter pet celebrate their next birthday at home.

Every morning he wakes up like someone told him it's the first day of summer break.

Tail? Wagging. (Well... nub wagging.)
Ball? Best invention ever.
People? Obsessed.
Other dogs? "Hi! Wanna be friends?"

He's basically the human equivalent of someone who claps when the plane lands, gets genuinely excited to see a butterfly, and thinks every stranger could become a best friend.

Hamilton is only 11 months old, so yes, he's still figuring life out. He's got that wonderful puppy brain that occasionally says, "What if we made every moment the most exciting moment ever?" But underneath all that enthusiasm is an incredibly sweet boy who just wants to love someone with his whole heart. He loves fetch, thrives in our shelter playgroups, shares his room with another dog, and is looking for a family that's excited to teach him all the good-boy things he's ready to learn.

If you've been waiting for a sign... I don't know... maybe it's the ridiculously happy brindle dog with the tiny wagging nub tail who's been practicing his "best friend" skills his entire life. 🥹🐾

🐱 Turns out this little guy skipped the "How to Be a Cat" class.

Cats are famous for squeezing through impossibly small spaces... but this kitten's confidence was just a little bigger than his skills.

Animal Care Officer Solano responded to a call about a kitten that had managed to get himself stuck in the top of a ladder. By the time he arrived, several people had already spent quite a while trying to free him. They had even tried using baby oil in an attempt to help the kitten slip free.

Thankfully, kittens are incredibly flexible. Using careful, gentle movements, Officer Solano was able to safely free the kitten from the ladder without injury.

💛 This rescue is also a great reminder of why kittens should stay with their mom and littermates for their first eight weeks whenever possible. During that time, they learn important social behaviors, boundaries, and survival skills that help keep them safe as they grow.

We're happy to report this curious kitten is no longer practicing his escape artist routine from inside a ladder. 🐾

🚨 URGENT: Buddy & Prancer need placement by Wednesday, August 5 at 5 p.m. 🚨

Shelters save lives, but they aren't meant to be long-term homes. Even with daily enrichment, walks, playgroups, and dedicated staff, the stress of shelter life can take a toll. These two dogs urgently need a second chance.

Buddy (A880020) – Adoption or Rescue
Buddy has never met a stranger he didn't like. He's playful, treat-motivated, loves other dogs, and is one of our playgroup superstars. He's even helped staff evaluate new dogs because of his friendly, easygoing personality. Buddy has been waiting since April, and the kennel environment is beginning to wear on him. The isolation and constant stress are causing him to struggle with kennel stress. He's become overly excited when it's finally time to leave his kennel for walks, but with calm guidance, he settles quickly. What Buddy really needs isn't another day in a kennel—it's a home where he can finally relax and just be a dog.

Prancer (A923496) – Rescue Only
Prancer arrived underweight, severely matted, and with several medical issues. While he's made progress, he still needs additional diagnostics and medical care that a rescue can provide. Despite everything he's been through, Prancer is full of life. He loves people, adores other dogs, and has completely stolen the hearts of our staff and volunteers. In fact, volunteers have already raised $1,000 to help with his medical care.

Both dogs are current on vaccines, and we'll do our best to help with transport.

❤️ Please share. One post could be the reason they get the second chance they deserve.
