During Memorial Day weekend, Fort Ord National Monument marked America's 250th anniversary with a celebration rooted in the land itself.

The Freedom 250 event brought the community together at one of California's most historically rich public lands — where over 1,400 horses and cavalry once trained, and where 86 miles of trails now welcome hikers, riders, equestrians, and families from across the Central Coast.

Highlights included the dedication of a new interpretive sign at the Comanche gravesite and a visit from wild horse ambassadors Freedom and Liberty — a nod to the deep connection between these lands, the animals that shaped them, and the people who care for them today.

On June 6, a group of adventurers joined BLM for a full-day journey through the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument — 34 miles of trail, history, and public lands all in one celebration of America's 250th anniversary.

Participants traveled from Palm Desert to Anza, tracing a stretch of the historic Juan Bautista de Anza expedition — a 1,200-mile route from Sonora, Mexico to San Francisco completed 250 years ago. The group even drove through a portion of the Bautista Creek Wild & Scenic River, where Anza himself once passed. Along the way, four trails were covered in a single outing: the Ed Hastey Garden Trail, Wilderness Loop Trail, Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail, and Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail.

The day also honored National Trails Day, the Anza 250 and Forests 250 commemorations, and the Monument's own 25th anniversary year — a fitting reminder of how much history lives on our public lands.

A big thank you to our partners at the U.S. Forest Service and Friends of the Desert Mountains, whose staff and volunteers made this collaboration possible. Each participant received a Forests 250 challenge coin as a pledge to get involved and give back to the public lands they love.

Meet Barry! 🐾 The BLM Bakersfield Field Office's newest team member is a one-year-old Belgian Malinois who joined Law Enforcement Ranger Matthew Pena in April.
Barry came to us from Top Dog Facilities in Ripon, CA, and is certified in patrol work and narcotics detection. He's already put those skills to use, detecting narcotics in multiple vehicles and helping apprehend a felony suspect.
When he's not on duty, Barry's weakness is a good Kong ball.
Welcome to the team, Barry! 🐕

🔥 Important Update: Seasonal fire restrictions are now in effect for BLM-managed public lands in the Ukiah Field Office, covering Colusa, Glen, Lake, Marin, Mendocino, Napa, Solano, Sonoma, and Yolo counties. These restrictions are in place due to dry conditions and high wildland fire danger.
Restrictions include no campfires or open flames of any kind, no smoking except in enclosed vehicles or buildings, and no motorized vehicles off designated roads or trails. As always, fireworks are prohibited on all BLM lands.
Help us prevent human-caused wildfires — 95% of California wildfires are caused by people. Please plan ahead, use caution, and recreate responsibly.

📍 Hiking the Lost Coast? Know before you go —
Poison oak is a common sight along the Lost Coast, and it's found throughout the King Range and surrounding trails. While it plays a valuable role in the local ecosystem — providing berries for birds and shelter for wildlife — it can cause an itchy skin rash in people who come into contact with its oily resin, urushiol. (Even some of our own rangers aren't immune!)

Here's what to know before you hit the trail:
🌿 Learn its look. Poison oak changes with the seasons — lush green leaves in spring and summer, red and orange in fall, bare woody stems in winter. Familiarize yourself with all its stages before you head out.

🧴 Be prepared. Carrying a skin cleanser or washing thoroughly with soap and water soon after exposure can help remove the oils from skin, clothing, shoes, and gear.

🏥 Reacted to it? Mild rashes can often be soothed with cool water rinses or clay-based products to help dry blisters. For more severe reactions, consult your doctor.

A little awareness goes a long way on the trail. With some preparation, you can explore the Lost Coast confidently and safely.
