COLLEGE FOR ALL. Not one destination. More possibilities.
We’ve loved the conversation sparked by the recent CBS13 story about Sac New Tech. It has also reminded us that when we use the word “college,” we may not all be imagining the same thing.
At Sac New Tech, our motto is “Where EVERYONE Goes to College.” Every student has the opportunity to take real college courses while still in high school.
But College for All does not mean the same college path for all.
We aren’t telling every student they need to earn a bachelor’s degree. We aren’t deciding their future for them. In fact, we’re trying to do the opposite.
We want to expand the number of futures our students can see for themselves.
Our partnership with Sacramento City College gives students an opportunity to discover just how broad the world of higher education really is.
College can mean earning an associate degree and transferring to a university.
It can mean earning a certificate that leads directly to a career.
It can mean career and technical education, workforce training, entrepreneurship, the arts, technology, health careers, or discovering an interest a student didn’t even know existed.
And yes, it can mean taking English, math, science, history, and other academic courses that move students closer to a degree.
There isn’t one destination.
That’s exactly the point.
We believe students should have the opportunity to explore these possibilities before they graduate from high school, while they still have teachers, families, mentors, and an entire school community walking alongside them.
We want them to learn how to navigate a college campus. Talk with a professor. Ask for help. Use tutoring. Discover new interests. Take on challenges. Experience success. Sometimes struggle. And realize they are capable of more than they may have imagined.
Then, when graduation comes and it’s time to answer the question, “What’s next?”, we want our students to make that decision from a place of experience, confidence, and choice.
Some will transfer to four-year universities.
Some will pursue associate degrees.
Some will earn certificates or enter career programs.
Some will enter the workforce.
Some will build businesses.
And some will take paths we haven’t even imagined yet.
Those choices belong to our students.
Our job is to make sure a lack of access, exposure, information, or belief in themselves doesn’t make the choice for them.
That’s what College for All means at Sac New Tech.
Not one destination. More possibilities.
