California State Archives The California State Archives collects, preserves, and provides access to State records

The California State Archives collects, catalogs, preserves, and provides access to the historic records of state government and some local governments. The Archives collection is primarily composed of records from California state agencies, the governor's office, the state legislature, and the State Supreme Court and Courts of Appeal. The records are organized under the name of the agency or offi

ce that transferred the records to the Archives. The collections also include some private papers that have been donated to the Archives. The State Archives has specialized programs to collect and preserve records of state government. The Legislative Archives Program, Court Records Program and Governor's Records Program work with the three branches of Government to identify records of enduring value that should be preserved in the Archives. The State Records Appraisal Program works to identify and collect records of state agencies. Each year thousands of researchers contact and visit the California State Archives seeking documentation to support their historical investigation. Reference Desk staff help researchers identify collections that are most relevant to their area of interest and retrieve those records from a secure storage area for researchers to view in the large Research Room. Public education and outreach are also important elements of the State Archives' mission. In October of each year, the public can attend the Archives Month Open House, enjoy a behind–the–scenes tour of the facility and learn more about the archival profession and other archival repositories in California. The State Archives continually works to promote the development of the archival profession through the Western Archives Institute (co–sponsored by the Society of California Archivists) and the Graduate Internship Program. The State Archives occupies a facility one block south of the State Capitol as part of the Secretary of State office complex. Completed in 1995, the 170,000 square foot building has six floors of environmentally controlled stacks, including a number of specialized vaults, which house the Archives' collections. The building also has facilities for preservation and research use of archival materials.

Today we honor Juneteenth, the day in which the news of the Emancipation Proclamation and the end of slavery reached Texas via Union troops in Galveston (the news of freedom did not reach the Texas population until two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation). Although California was admitted as a free state in 1850, African Americans faced many struggles after the passage of California's Fugitive Slave Act in 1852. One famous case concerned Carter Perkins, Sandy Jones and Robert Perkins, three enslaved people brought to California from Mississippi by their owner C. S. Perkins. Carter, Sandy and Robert had earned their freedom while in the state, but were later arrested in an attempt by their former enslaverto return them to slavery in the south. Abolitionists and the African American communities of Sacramento and San Francisco mobilized in their defense, orchestrated a dramatic rescue of the men from the ship they had been put aboard, and arranged for their case to be heard by the Supreme Court of California.
Unfortunately, the California Supreme Court ruled against the three men, forcing them to return to their enslaver in Mississippi. Despite the tragic outcome, the case stands as a powerful testament to the resilience and unified resistance of the Californian communities who fought to protect the three men against the injustice of slavery. This power of attorney document signed by Mississippi Governor Henry S. Foote forms part of the case file In re Perkins (1852) 2 Cal. 424. [WPA No. 3285, Supreme Court of California Records

Question: Does the California State Archives have any records related to the Mattachine Society?

Answer: Yes. The Mattachine Society was one of the earliest gay rights organizations in the United States, founded in the 1950s. The California State Archives preserves the organization's articles of incorporation within our Secretary of State records, including documents signed by the society's founding members.

The Archives also holds materials related to the Mattachine Society within the records of the California Un-American Activities Committee. Among these is a flyer that challenged the criminalization of homosexuality by comparing it to the criminalization of left-handedness, offering a glimpse into the advocacy and messaging strategies of the early gay rights movement.

These records provide valuable insight into an important chapter of California and LGBTQ+ history.

California’s California Legislative LGBTQ Caucus was formed in 2002 to create a forum for California Legislators to discuss issues that affect LGBTQ Californians and to further the goal of equality and justice for all Californians. California became the first state in the United States to officially form a caucus of openly-LGBTQ state legislators and continues to be a leader of progress for all Americans. In 2023, our membership hit a new milestone of 12 members, becoming one of the largest LGBTQ Caucus in the Nation, and continues to remain strong – again, achieving 12% representation in 2025. Despite tremendous progress and an unprecedented swell of support for the LGBTQ community worldwide, there is still much work to do to protect and uplift the most vulnerable in our community. The LGBTQ Caucus strives to advocate for diversity and inclusion of all people, including differently abled bodies. Our Caucus is working diligently to support LGBTQ leaders that represent our community at the local, state, and federal levels.

This intricate puzzle ball, balanced atop a stand of sculptural horses, was gifted to California Secretary of State March Fong Eu sometime between 1974 and 1994.
Chinese puzzle balls are renowned for their extraordinary craftsmanship and astonishingly fine detail. Take a close look at the multiple concentric spheres, each delicately carved and nested within the next, as well as the intricate designs etched into their remarkably thin surfaces.
Dragons are a common motif in traditional Chinese puzzle balls and are often hidden among the carvings. Do you spot anything that looks like a dragon in these images? Let us know what you find!

In 1900, France hosted one of the world’s great international expositions in Paris, drawing participation from nations across the globe. While the United States took part, California stood out as the only state to send its own official representation to the fair.
To support this effort, the California Paris Exposition Commission was established to prepare and maintain exhibits showcasing the state’s industries and resources, while also producing promotional literature about California. Among the most fascinating pieces created was this map, Viticultural Districts of California.
The map was one of six promotional maps produced by the commission, alongside maps highlighting California’s agricultural, oil and petroleum, climatic, mineral, and forestry districts. Each map featured descriptive text in English, French, and German to reach an international audience. Today, the California State Archives is proud to preserve copies of all six maps in our collections.
