Today, on what would have been her 81st birthday, we honor the life and legacy of Marsha P. Johnson.

Marsha was a Black q***r and transgender icon, organizer, performer, and community caretaker who helped shape the modern LGBTQ+ liberation movement. Alongside Sylvia Rivera, she co-founded Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries, creating community and support for transgender and q***r young people experiencing homelessness.

Here in Sacramento, her name and vision live within our work through the Marsha P. Johnson Center South.

Located in South Sacramento, the Marsha P. Johnson Center South works to reduce health disparities and create a place where LGBTQ+ people can receive affirming, culturally responsive care. From HIV and STI testing and PrEP navigation to harm-reduction resources, counseling, support groups, and gender-affirming care services and referrals, the Center works to reach people who have too often encountered barriers, exclusion, or judgment when seeking care.

We carry Marsha’s name with both pride and responsibility. Her legacy reminds us that honoring our history also means continuing the work: protecting Black trans lives, caring for one another, and ensuring that every member of our community has the opportunity to live with dignity, health, safety, and joy.

As Marsha reminded us, “You never completely have your rights, one person, until you all have your rights.”

Happy birthday, Marsha. Your courage, joy, and “pay it no mind” spirit continue to guide us. 🏳️‍⚧️🌸

A recently finalized CMS rule would prohibit federal Medicaid and CHIP funding from being used for certain gender-affirming care for transgender youth. This petition asks Governor Gavin Newsom to consider state-level actions to maintain access to care for transgender youth enrolled in California's Medi-Cal programs, including emergency funding and development of a state-only reimbursement pathway for providers.

Governor Newsom has the ability to take definitive action to preserve this needed coverage, and work to establish alternate billing pathways for state-only coverage. That's why we need you to contact him today:
