Welcome to the official page for the California Legislative Le***an, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Q***r (LGBTQ) Caucus.

The Caucus was formed originally in June 2002. Its role is to present a forum for the California Legislature to discuss issues that affect LGBTQ Californians and to further the goal of equality and justice for all Californians. The formation of the LGBTQ Caucus made California the first state in the country to recognize an official caucus of openly-LGBTQ state legislators. Today marks the beginning of a month dedicated to celebrating the strength, resilience, diversity, and joy of our LGBTQ+ communities. As we honor those who paved the way and continue the fight for equality and inclusion, we also recognize the work that remains in building a future where every LGBTQ+ person can live authentically, safely, and proudly.

At the halfway mark! 14 LGBTQ Caucus bills passed their houses of origin this week 🌈

From protecting access to health care and mental health services to supporting LGBTQ+ students and families, combating hate, expanding public safety, strengthening privacy protections, and standing with transgender service members and veterans, these bills move California closer to a more equitable future for all.

The work isn’t over, but today we celebrate this important progress toward protecting our communities and addressing key issues facing Californians.

We haven’t been spewing hyperbole when we’ve warned that attacks on transgender people are the opening salvo in a broader effort to roll back LGBTQ+ rights. Time and again, we have seen how efforts to marginalize and dehumanize transgender people are used to test the waters – laying the groundwork for wider attacks on the entire LGBTQ+ community. What is happening in Tennessee is exactly that escalation: starting with transgender people, and now advancing policies that threaten the fundamental rights of all LGBTQ+ people, including the freedom to marry.

Forced outing isn’t a theoretical concern— it has and will lead to rejection, discrimination, homelessness, and violence. Educators should not be turned into agents of compulsory disclosure.

This ruling revives a dangerous decision and creates real fear for students and families across California.

We cannot adopt the language of MAGA extremists who in the last year are actively seeking to roll back the rights of women, LGBTQ+ individuals, and marginalized communities on the basis of what they assert is ‘culturally normal.’

Today, our LGBTQ Caucus Chair Chris Ward and Caucus Member Caroline Menjivar spoke in support of SCR 89 to affirm that Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion are not optional add-ons, but essential foundations of the American Dream.
