Driver Arrested Following Fatal U.S. 50 Construction Zone Crash
SACRAMENTO — A roadway construction worker was fatally injured early Monday morning after being struck by a vehicle within a closed construction zone on eastbound U.S. 50 in Sacramento.
On August 10, at approximately 12:26 a.m., the California Highway Patrol (CHP) received a report of a traffic crash involving a worker within a closed construction zone on eastbound U.S. 50 near Stockton Boulevard. Officers responded to the scene.
The preliminary investigation indicates that Ruby Lorenzo, 24, of Escalon, was driving eastbound on U.S. 50 when her vehicle collided with another vehicle traveling in the same direction. Lorenzo’s vehicle then traveled into the closed construction zone, where it struck a construction vehicle, a roadway worker and a guardrail. The roadway worker sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
After the crash, Lorenzo continued eastbound and left the scene. The driver of the other vehicle followed Lorenzo and provided CHP dispatchers with information that helped officers locate her. Lorenzo was subsequently arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter, driving under the influence and felony hit-and-run.
“This tragic loss is a heartbreaking reminder of the devastating consequences of impaired driving and the dangers faced by workers in roadway construction zones,” said CHP South Sacramento Commander Captain Noah Hawkins. “We extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends and coworkers of the construction worker who lost their life in this tragic incident.”
