Substance use and overdose do not discriminate based on housing status. They affect people, families, and communities across California.

Today, for International Overdose Awareness Day, we remember the lives lost to overdose and those who carry that loss. We also recognize that substance use is not synonymous with homelessness, and housing status should never define how we see or treat someone.

🏫 August is back-to-school month 🚌

According to California Department of Education, about 300,000 students in the state were unstably housed during the 2024-25 school year, and Cal ICH data shows more than 150,000 school-aged youth accessed at least one homelessness service in FY 2024-25.

🚌 August is Back-to-School Month. 🏫

Students experiencing homelessness have rights!

Federal and California laws ensure that students experiencing homelessness, including those who are unaccompanied, are provided with rights and protections that support their full participation in school and access to needed wraparound supports.

Some of these rights include:
◾ Immediate school enrollment
◾ Continuation of attendance at their same school
◾ Transportation to and from their school of origin
◾ Expanded options for high school graduation
◾ Full participation in school, including in extracurricular activities
◾ Referrals from the homelessness liaison to needed community-based supports
◾ Free school meals

California has established homelessness education liaisons in each county office of education as well as homelessness education coordinators in each local education agency to coordinate wraparound supports.

August is Back-to-school month.

According to California Department of Education (CDE) data, nearly 300,000 students in the state were unstably housed in the 2024-2025 school year, and, of those, approximately 10,000 were unaccompanied, meaning without a parent or legal guardian present.

According to Cal ICH’s Homeless Data Integration System (HDIS), 150,630 students accessed at least one homelessness service in fiscal year 2024-2025.

To increase early identification and improve outcomes for students experiencing homelessness, California recently invested $116 million in state dollars to support school districts in identifying students experiencing homelessness.

☀️ It’s Cool to Be Kind.

Extreme heat can be dangerous for anyone, but it can be life-threatening for our neighbors experiencing homelessness, who often have nowhere to escape the heat.

Not everyone can offer a shelter bed, but everyone can:

💧 Be familiar with where cooling centers are located at in their county. If you meet someone trying to escape the heat, you can point them to a safe place to cool down.

🌡️Know the signs of heat illness. If someone appears confused, unresponsive, loses consciousness, or is experiencing a medical emergency related to the heat, call 911 immediately.
